How often do you replace your heater?

So I am about 2 years in to my Cobalt and I am wondering if I should be considering replacing it prior to it experiencing an issue?

It has been solid so far . . . . . What are you thoughts on when to replace a quality heater?

There's no expiration lifespan on the heater. As long as it's function you're good.

It wouldn't hurt to have a spare. I've got an eheim running and a Aqueon as a backup. A good quality heater like a Cobalt or Eheim can go for years. There's not much warning if they will go bad though. Good practice is just to eyeball it once a day, make sure temp is ok. I use an Inkbird controller with my heater that has an audible alarm should the temp exceed 2 degrees above my set temp. Good investment IMO.

As someone who just lost their whole reef to a heater that exploded. I would say I would change them once a year or so for good measure.

Yup, same day as changing smoke detector batteries makes it easy to remember!

Do you know how the inkbird compares to a ranco controller.
The inkbird can handle both heating cooling. Nice large digital temp display. Has alarms. I had a Ranco control a chiller once but I don't remember much about the features of it. Sorry.

I change mine every 12 months as a preventative measure even though I have 2 (one is set 2 degrees lower as a back up) and a temperature controller which is additionally controlled by my reef keeper lol. I don't trust heaters, and neither should you.

Jasper- i recommend eheim 250 watt heaters. Use them for year or less and toss them in my yard so I can get rid of them for you.

LOL - I've had my EHEIM heaters since I started with my 40g 2 years ago. I just added one when I upgraded to my reefer 250.

He had a cobalt neotherm. Heaters are rather inexpensive, so once a year is worth the peace of mind.

Oh I see. I've heard several incidents with that brand.

I have two heaters. I think one Eheim and another forgot brand. Been using with my apex for over 7 years, even covered in sponge and stuff in the sump. Bought it with my used tank, so they are even older than that.

Eheim is solid ime. I have 5 tanks-3 reefs and 2 fresh- running for 12 years +/- all with Eheim. I've broken the glass during maintenance but that's it. On big tanks I run 2 undersized as insurance.

I have the titanium metal element heaters w the cafeteria temp controller outside of the tank. So far it’s solid and the chance of brakage is smaller due to lack of glass

Lol. I lucked out. Was digging through my old snake aquarium and found my old ranco. Hooked it up and still works so I guess no need to look further.
