How old is too old?

I found a decent looking tank by the dumpster at my storage complex. In the tank was everything I needed to use it...lights, filters, etc.... I'm not sure of the gallons but it is a 36X24X12 inches. But anyway, I took it home and cleaned it out and saw the built by label on the bottom. The tank was built in 1990! The tank is like 20years old! Almost old enough to go out drinking! Do you think this tank is too old to trust holding water.....How old is too old for one of these glass aquariums?

I say..check for leaks first..craks.... If it passes..double check silicon...if it passes nice vinegar bath.. copper test..... I don see why not use it..IMO

Ok, the only thing not right so far is, for some reason, they cut the plastic center brace on the top of the tank. is there an easy way to fix something like that? Also, what is the copper test? Thanks!

But honestly sounds like 37/ 40 g that shoud not runn you more than 60 bucks .. or So... Might want to keep that in mind .. Also check out AGA website I am pretty sure it will tell you what size it is

If the glass has no cracks, you got a probable keeper. Do a good vinegar bath first to clean the glass and check for bad scratches and leaks. Whether or not it leaks, I would still replace the inside silicone. Use a sharp razor blade to trim old silicone from all the seams, including the top...re-seal with aquarium silicone. After the silicone is replaced, copper shouldn't be an issue.

Good find.

The tank volume Calculator. Using the following input parameters
Tank Length = 36 inches
Tank Width = 12 inches
Tank Height = 24 inches

Tank volume is calculated as
Tank Volume = 44.9 Gallons
If the silicone is good and it dose not leak, I would use it. Be careful if the silicone is blue there may have been copper used in the tank. Most ick treatments contain copper.
You might want to do a copper test.

I have a 55 that came out right after they stopped using those stainless steal frames. The glass is so thick it doesn't need a center brace. It's much older than 20 and works fine. I don't think the hobby has been around long enough for a tank to get to old.

If the center brace is broke/cut you need to fix that before you fill it with water. There are many methods to fixing them. 1 would be to buy a stip of 1/4 inch plexi and epoxy it in place or drill it and use some stainless fasteners. There are about 50 other ways to accomplish the same thing.

Yeah its a 45 and needs the brace- aga sells them for around 20 bucks- tank usually is around 75bucks. Older tanks had thicker glass- but the aga of the ninties had already moved to lighter glass. I have a stainless steel slate bottom tank, with some kind of asphalt in place of silicone that still works well. I would say its been in the office since the 60`s.

Now I would like to see a couple pics of that.

You can get some glass cut and silicone it to the tank as a brace. You have to use glass on glass as plexi want hold silicone very well. You want to have a the new glass brace about 6" wide and the and same width as the tank. I have fixed a 55 gal like that and it worked great.

Honestly the tank is the cheapest part of the system. If they cut the center brace the tank is warped. I would be surprised if there weren't scratches in the glass. Unless you're getting a deal on all the equipment which if old is probably not what you want anyway you should pass on this deal. There are too many great deals to be had on new systems complete with hundreds of dollars of equipment that people sell for next to nothing just to be rid of it.
