Thanks for the enjoyable read, Paul! I read through every page and so much laughter and knowledge.

I just moved a couple months ago (Unfortunately to Illinois and not the coast) and sold my old tank before I did. I'm in the long process of setting up a new tank but i've already decided I need a fish named Paul! =)

Beautiful grand-daughter! I'm almost 39 and having my first child (son) this month. Oh boy! =)

I hope it is a tough fish like a moray eel and not a Sissy fish like a lipstick tang or anything like that. :uzi:
 
I noticed on this beautiful Sunday morning that my neighbor is taking his two young boys roller skating and I was thinking how times have changed. The little boys had nice new skates like they use now with the boots attached and they had on helmits, knee and elbow pads. At that age I had, like all kids, metal skates that you put on your "shoes" (we didn't really use sneakers much) and you needed a skate key to attach the skates to your shoes. Of course before you used them you had to oil the wheels or they would squeak. The skates clamped on to the soles of your shoes and if you hit a bump, they would fall off causing you to fall and often times, scrape your knees. We always had scraped knees. If we skated a lot, we wrapped rags around our knees because band aids were expensive and would not cover those big scrapes. We would find a big hill and skate down it. That was scary as the only way to stop was to fall. Our parents were never with us as no one would steal us and there was no cell phones so we knew to come home before dark. :rolleyes:
We kids were in good shape and had street smarts. We knew where to get a drink of water (there was no bottled water) and occasionally free food.
We collected tadpoles, daphnia, frogs, turtles and lightning bugs. The entire year was spent outside as there was only black and white TV and there was nothing on anyway.
I am not sure how many kids live on my block as none of them even go outside. When I babysit, I always take my granddaughter to the park, sleigh riding, or boating. Even if it is raining or snowing. Kids belong outside.
Just my opinion of course and if I offended anyone, get over it. :thumbsup:
 
Thats the way it should be Paul. But these days Moms get their children taken away for neglect, or get sent to jail for: (true stories)

Letting kids play in fenced backyard "unattended" ( mom was inside with backdoor open)

Or

Playing in front yard with kids. Yes she was oitside with her kids.

Not only do you have to worry about your nosy neighbor turning you in for phantom neglect, but you have sexual predators and kidnappers to worry about. Its a sad sad state of affairs :(
 
I hated metal wheeled skates. I got into skateboards in 1975 but living in the sticks meant mail order was the only way to get them or any parts.

Appellativo, move to Meadowlakes, it is a private city with controlled access and the only crime is someone may pick up pecans out of your front yard. :D
 
There is a way to let your kids play in your yard without being supervised and that would be to lock up all the un supervised lawyers. It is them who make up these stupid laws. Like spilling hot coffee on yourself and being able to sue. If they took that lawyer and poured hot coffee on him, we would not have that silly law. But people today are Sissies and we let them get away with it.
I don't know what lawyers did when I was young but we fell all the time and broke bones and no lawyers or lawsuits were filed. If you do something stupid, you deserve to break a bone and it is your fault and no one else. If you go to an amusement ride and fall off something, you are probably an idiot and should have stayed home. If you spill hot coffee on yourself, not only should you not be able to sue, but you should also clean it up. I broke a number of bones doing stupid things like working, skiing, surfing or riding my bike. I was wrong to break my bones, it was my fault. :sad2:
Today my wife and I were on our boat, by ourselves for a change. It was nice and relaxing. For such a beautiful day, there were only a few boats out. If you don't go out on such a beautiful day, when are you going to go out? Those boats are all moored, only one or two of them are actually out.

 
The problem Paul is that there is no accountabilityfor our actions or inactions any more. It is always some one elses fault or some one else caused the problem.
After my generation we are just raising generation after generation of wimps and whiners!
 
Oh I agree with that. Plenty of wimps, whiners and Sissies around.
Thats what happens when we go so long without a draft. The men especially get soft and wimpy. :mtool: (thats the manliest thing I could find)
I mean even if your fish dies, get over it. It's a fish and fish are here to be eaten.
A fish is not an animal that was ever designed to die of old age, they always get eaten, even great white sharks eventually get to big to catch enough food to eat and they get eaten. I eat fish almost every day and I don't give them last rites before I eat them.
Be a man, grow some hair on your chest open a door for a Lady, step on a bug, go out in a thunderstorm, shovel some snow, hit yourself with a hammar, get into a fight, and lose and don't watch any reality TV because thats not reality, thats wimp TV.
If you get a cut, let it bleed for a while than if you want, put some duct tape on it. I had a guy once working for me and he was on one of the upper floors. He walked all the way down to ask me for a band aid. I said, your an electrician and you have like 6 rolls of electrical tape, what do you think band aids are made out of some type of magical, sterile sticky miracle tape?
And if it's bleeding that bad, put a tourniquet on it. What do you want to do? Live forever!

You've mentioned your algae trough on several occasions, but I don't see any detailed information about it. I am thinking about adding one to my aquarium and I would like to benefit from your years of tinkering.

I love Denver and lived there for about 5 months when I was stationed in Colorado Springs. But it really needs an ocean and I can't be away from one for that long.
I remember those days well, but the hobby was more interesting then because we had to experiment and everything was a challenge. We bought a fish and had no idea how to take care of it but that was the challenge. Today it is simple, the internet makes it confusing because there are to many opinions from people who kept one or two fish and their methods become fact even though many times they are completely wrong. I am sure in those days I had ideas that now I realize are very wierd and toxic. Luckily there was no internet for me to publish those wrong theories. I started a book in the 70s and still have it, but today it would be considered so outdated that Marvel Comics may want to use it in there Super Hero comic books as a way to eliminate all marine life :lol:

If Denver had an ocean, I may never leave. Well, I've stayed for 35 years already so I guess I'm dealing with it.
