HOW TO CONVERT A 20G LONG TANK INTO A REFUGIUM? and Tomato Clown trap update!

Hello all!

Thank for the fish trap idea, I was able to catch my tomato clown in about 2 hours with out causing any stress to my other fish....the Gatorade bottle work like a charm…

Now is time to take out my wet/dry and install a homemade refugium. I will like to know if anyone has the measurement for the chambers. I have seen a lot of pictures but they have no measurements, it’s that something that you do to your liking? Or do I need to be precise? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. (20 gal long 30X12X12)

There is no set size the refugium compartment needs to be in the tank.

I would suggest taking cardboard cut outs of the baffles you plan to use and put them where you think you would like them to go so you can visually see what it looks like.

Check out Melevs reef for good sump info

Here is the design that I used for standard 20g...You could probably modify it for your setup. the only thing that you may want to change is the return section. If you are not using a ATO, it is way too small, but since I have ATO, its not a big deal to me.

here is my super simple 10g refugium. it wasnt pretty, but it worked realy well. of course if you have more paitience than me, the one illal linked to looks sweet and more like what your looking to do.

I just completed the same project with a 20L. I'll post some pictures this evening when I get home. My skimmer is plumbed externally, so that section is probably smaller than yours will need to be.

I found this thread to be the most helpful and followed it (almost) to a 'T'. One important consideration, IMO more important than section sizes, is the baffle height. I believe that thread walks you through that calculation. I'll post the sizes I used this evening.

THANK YOU! AWSOME SITES AND PICTURES

Keep in mind that you want as large a return pump section as affordable, as well as make sure that your skimmer fits inside the diameter of the tank. Most people shouldn't have a problem with those requirements, however I had to use a 29 for a skimmer, return, and refuge for a 120g tank, so to say the least it's a bit cramped, and the skimmer almost didn't fit, so I had to remove the inflow chamber to get it to fit in my pre-made sump that I bought from Exotic Aquariums (inexpensive as well, as far as sumps go).

One last thing to keep in mind that when the pumps go off, you may get some back siphon from the tank. Personally I left about half the space for this, because worse case scenario for me is 5 gallon ATO reservoir dumps full contents to sump while the return pump breaks...

Thank you!!!!!

I will work on this tomorrow and will post pictures of the end result...
(if it looks good as Kogo's :D )
