How to FEED your reef tank so that your corals will really GROW, instead of ho-hum...

Gresh- the brown dusting on the glass (and elsewhere) is diatoms. I understand this.
What's the green dusting of microalgae that grows on glass.... are you sure that it can be classified as a phyto?

FWIW I can dose phyto and rotifers into my reef aquarium but I guarantee you all of it's gone rather quickly due to a combination of factors (including system filtration).

Do you dose phyto? Are there people getting away without using it for their inverts? Especially clams, small ones?

While my clam (( Crocea )), isn't a small one (( about 5-6" now, started off around 2-3 )) it has been doing great with me never dosing phyto -- have had it for about 7 years now.

Problem is that we do not have exact data on what different corals actually eat !

they find all sorts of things in coral guts, yet we dont have any scientific data on them.

I personally feed my tank phyto daily (really small amounts) hoping some will eat it directly and the rest will be fuel for the rest of the bacteria and zooplanktons.

no water quality Issues.
Also, besides feeding fish daily, I feed Reef Roids, Nutra food, Cyclopezze, every night. different one everynight.

it is hard to saw though. the system is on Zeo so its ULNS, so hard to say if the feeding is what causes corals to look good or if its the low nutrition.

but one thing is for sure. even looking at the natural coral reef, its not like there is nothing in water, but there is nothing dead rotting in water ! I believe that reef tanks should have HIGH nutrition, but the right type, and alive so it wont degrade the water quality.

its a dream I'm following, and I know such situation wont happen in my 100G of water lol but maybe one day we will be able to make it happen :)

Sounds like something I'm trying with my 320g set-up... but I won't have corals in it for almost a year I think...

this is what I'm talking about. (the question was addressed to Gresham.)

My other option is to make the discussion private- something I rarely do because everyone else stands to lose.

Okay, so in future if you ask a general question addressed to someone, but that anyone could answer (if they know), you would prefer not to get an answer... I'm sorry I'm not used to people not wanting information when they ask a question... (I know I'm relatively new here but maybe you should have a more private discussion...)

You know I never have ID'd it. I will find some and bring it to our Phycologist though. I'm sure it's been done and documented, I just don't have the time to research it right now. Maybe when this deadline looming over me is done :)

In order to get on your glass it had to have had a planktonic stage. This to me makes it a phytoplankton. Others we call phytoplankton can settle out and grow in surface mats. They are still lumped in phytoplankton.

Gary and I do have back channels, but, if we used them the knowledge wouldn't be posted here. I think him asking for a direct response is OK, but, I also think you giving your 2 cents is cool as well :)

let's keep this thread moving, it's one I rather enjoy. We all could use more knowledge in this category :) Even scientists that do this research daily freely admit we know very little about it.

Just for general information... there are over 200 different types of diatom algae. If the algae is only growing on your glass and not doing well elsewhere it's probably a diatom (they require the silica to form and the glass is one of the easiest ways to get it, especially if it's not being added in the water)

i am getting frustrated as I keep trying to post a reply to a different post but it keeps posting here... !!!!!its ticking me off!!!!!

A great appreciation for INFORMATION

A great appreciation for INFORMATION

:reading:Hey that is cool info and I think that when one is trying to learn it takes others to pass info along as you have. I really do appreciate it as I am trying to have a healthy tank . I am new to the saltwater tank-reef tank hobby and will be looking toward those like you to help me learn all that I can. Right now I have a 46 gal bowed front tank with a 29 gal sump setup and that was the first thing that I had to learn was how to set up the tank in the proper way so that I could have corals and keep them healthy. I didnt know how the sump system actually worked exactly till I had it set up n running then I fully understood how the overflow and evaporation chamber worked. I was very happy that I set my tank up the way I did as it works great. I have some pictures in the album section of this site and its titled bubble trap I think? LOL ? check it out. please keep posting info like you have as it is great info. I have been trying to post this reply for almost an hour now and I hope this is my final try. as it keeps posting it to a different posting and I dont know why it is doing this but it sure is frustrating as I want you to know that your info is very important to those that want to expand their knowlage about reef tanks. I am going to explode if this try fails again. This posting is for the person that wrote about the feeding of corals.
