How to get an anemone to split

Hello...I suppose an anemone splitting is something the aquarist cannot control? What would be the necessary factors needed to encourage an anemone to split?

What type of anemone are you referring too? To the best of my knowledge the two hosting anemones that will naturally split are Mags and BTAs.

I'd like to know what causes this also. I've read that they'll split only when they are happy, and I have also read they'll split when they are unhappy - trying to "survive" hoping one or the other will live. It's probably true a bit in both cases I would guess.

I just noticed my BTA split this week, it's been doing great. I feed it half an uncooked cocktail shrimp a week or every week and a half. It's under 4 T5's in my 75 gallon tank, and loves a lot of flow.

I didn't want it to split - maybe that's the trick. Hope it doesn't split and it probably will.

Im sure most people say it splits under stress is because they havent been able to make it super happy to the point where it spilts by itself

Its alot easier to stress corals out then it is too make them super happy

Just an observation

Uhhhh... just saying, but anemones aren't corals. If you didn't mean it like it sounds then forgive me, but if you actually thought it was a coral then I wouldn't be giving advice about anemones if I were you! ;)

 woah wait, its not a coral? :D

just kidding

I should have stated what kind of anemone it is initially..it is a Rose BTA, I have had it for about a year.

Heavy feedings for a month followed by a large water change can cause it to split. From my experience, if your tank is healthy and clean then they do not seem to split as often as in a tank that has poor water quality.

You could always go with a sharp scalpel for a complete vertical cut from the mouth outwards on both sides cutting the animal entirely in half. I have been doing it that way for almost seven years. As long as the specimen is well fed, healthy and acclimated to the tank then they almost always survive a cut.

Hmmm...interesting..so it sounds like I need to shake up my tank.
I have only been doing this for a year...I am hoping to upgrade to bigger tank this Fall...I have an 8 Gallon bio-cube that I started with....I test my water...but I also had it tested at the local saltwater shop who said "you have water that other other people would kill for"....in a small tank like that if I do a huge water change or shake up the tank to get the anemone to split..I suppose there is the risk I will wipe out my tank. I know I should not keep an anemone in such a small tank..but he has survived for a year and is thriving...will upgrade soon.

I would not mess with anything until you get a larger tank. The move to the larger tank may just cause the split you are looking for.

Stress will cause them to split. Mine was stung by my hammer coral. Two weeks later there were two RBTAs in my tank. I've heard of people cutting them in half, but I don't think I'd ever do that.

lol Be careful for what you wish for :) You can easily end up with too many. 1 turns to 2... 2 turn into 4 and so on :)

Drink beer....
....Pee in the sump.

It's like alcohol dosing but you get the benefits!

Seriously though if you change the water parameters for the better or the worse in a rapid fashion they will usually split. also you can move their rock or change the flow.
