How to grow red algae?

juprana,

Gracilaria is a common red algae used to feed and many species grow rapidly. It shouldn't be hard for you to find if you don't have any already.

What do you think of something like this:
-10 gallon tank
-Air pump w/ one of those long air stones
-Two light fixtures (I use fixtures that are designed to be used for reptile terrariums) each w/ a screw-in PC lamp around 40-45watts with a kevlin rating of 3,000-6,500 suspended over the tank (be sure the bulbs won't be hit with spray from the tank)

You could use water from your display tank for your culture water or you could buy something like F/2 fertilizer from an aquaculture supply company and add that to fresh, mixed SW. I'll bet there are some scientific journal papers out there that detail what kind of nutrient concentrations gracilaria and / or other algae grow well under. Other algae you might want to look into growing for your tang as a food source are Ulva, Porphyra, Halymenia, and other non-toxic red or Ulvophycean green algae.

HTH,
Kevin
