how to lower kh and alk

polywise

OLD SCHOOL-ish
I am running a calcium reactor

tank readings
CA of 410ppm , but I have high readings of 14.3kh and 5.9alk

how do you lower them, without lowering the CA value?

lack of knowledge---

what in the reactor what makes the ALK go up?
my tank PH is always constant around 8.2

reactor runs 1.5 bubbles /second with a flow of .075 ml/hr

Tropic Marin has a product called Alca-balance that lowers alk while raising CA, once you reach the proper ratio, turn off the reactor until the desired parameters are achieved.

As menard suggested, once you get the alk levels down whilst maintaining the calcium I would be dialing the CO2 down a bit .

menard,
how long do you think it will take to get the KH and ALK down to reasonable levels?

How much do you think I should redial the bubble counter back down to when I turn the unit back on? The unit is a MTC PRO-CAL reactor

trueblackpercula,
I am only set up to change 50 gallons at a clip thats 10% of the system. I usually like to let the water mix and airate for a few days minimum before it is used, but it is worth a try....

yikes !
lots of different advice, whatever I decide to do, it will be slow

Reefflections,
from your experences;

how long do you think it will take to move on it's own?
light to medium loading of SPS frags 5"max on size, a frogspawn, hammer, toadstool, clam and 600 lbs of live rock 20% covered in coraline alge.

This is depend on your load. Is your tank heavyly populated w/ stony ?
Crank it down a little then measure the Alk. the next day, then the next until the reading reach down to 8 to 9 Dkh. This where U want it to be.

Well depends on your volume of water and your bioload.
Here is and example
240 reef tank,my reactor went crazy on me.Went you to 11 alk and of coarse Cal went up also.I just turn the reactor off.And just play the waiting game. You will be very surprise how long it takes to fall. But Alk and Cal will fall very slow. This is the best for your corals, the slower the better. It took my system 5 days to get it down to 9.6,from 11.So don't be concern how long it takes.Just keep testing with your test kits. You really only need to check Alk,because Cal will fall along with it.It depends where you want to run your system at.But just let it drop on it's own.You need not to add anything.I was very surprise how long it takes. You would think by turning it off,it will drop fast. But it doesn't.So just chill out,and let the tank do it's thing for you.If it's done to fast, big issues with STN /or RTN.But doing it this way, this is the safest way,to get back on track.

Sorry about that.I was reading a lot of other threads here.I tought your ALK was up and your Cal also.Your Cal seems to be find.I would go along with Menard said here also. You just need to do the Alk.

reactor off for about a day now
this mornings readings down a bit from 14.3KH and 5.9 ALK
to 13.6KH and 4.85 ALK

I was wondering if this could also be a cause to the out of balance readings. My reacor was due for a media refill. There was about 3" of media in the first chamber. Before adding the new media, I grabbed some of the remaing. It did not feel like the new media does. It felt squishy, with a little bit of a grit feeling.?Here is where my lack of knowledge comes in to play:
Is there a chance that the media had been exhausted of CA, and was only releasing the elements that effect the KH and ALK ?

Well as of today the reacor is still turned off, and the readings have been dropping, CA345PPM ,10.9KH, 3.89ALK. Some of my corals have not survived.. all I can say is that I am feeliing upset that I let this happen.

As I go forward it will be slow. I wll be out of town for the next week, so next update will be when I get back. I hope by then, I an begin to get back on track.
