How to recharge DI resin

After a recharge, I usually dont mix the anion and cation back together, I put them in seprate DI containers, sometimes one or the other runs out faster.

This is so do not have to separate them out again for another recharge or only have to recharge the one which needs it - much faster.

Out of curiosity, how do you know when one of the other needs a recharge? Or do you just recharge them both when the TDS starts to creep?

Do you have the anion or the cation first in line? Does it matter?

Thanks!

I do not care what the die says I use a tds meter to know when the resin needs to be recharged.
I mentioned earlier that I would have mixed the resins but did not have enough to fill the canisters. I had to pull some resin from some mixed stuff that I had. The stuff I did in the photo shoot is not mine. The guy I got it from he does not have two canisters. The next time I do this for my self I will add resin before I separate.

It does not matter which you run first as far as I know. My anion seems to run out faster. I go by an inline TDS meter, when it starts to read something above 5, I look at the resins to see which one looks to be the most depleted. I recharge that one. If the TDS still reads 5 or higher I recharge the other one.

i couldent find lye for todays recharge.
but. i used somting else. made by zap its a liquid and has sodium hydroxide and potasium hydroxide *i think, i forget
what ever it was it is ok to use

seems to of worked except that i didnt use enough ( since it was liquid it was more dilute i guess and i didnt want to over do it so i treated it like dry lye(

but when these two chemicals are mixed together what do they make ( muratic and potasium )

Potassium chloride, if I remember my chemistry. oh, and water.
I seem to remember that anytime you mix an acid and a base, you get a salt of some sort and water.

Potassium chloride is primarily used in plant fertilizer and as a sodium free table salt replacement (thank you wikipedia). So pretty much instead of saltwater (w/ NaCl) you made saltwater and KCl.

it is toxic at over 2500mg/Kg, so if you weigh about 165 lbs, don't eat more than 7 oz. :)

I managed to find a local supply of pure sodium hydroxide at a farm supply company. The only downfall is that they only sell it in 50lb bags. Lol. That's a LOT of lye.

What is that 50lb bag sold for, what is its intended use?

I have no idea. :) I believe it's used in farming for something or another..

making meth?

It's funny you mention that; one of the reasons it's harder to find Lye in retail stores here is because of the "Methwatch" program we have where they control access to ingredients commonly used for making meth.

It's funny that I can't find a tiny 2lb container of it, while I can easily buy a 50lb bag.

I guess they just want to shut down the small scale producers. The meth makers that can use a 50 lb bag supply to many jobs ;)

How much is the 50lb bag.

$60 CDN. So it's certainly very affordable per pound. I just don't know what I'd do with the rest. :)

Well, I found it. :) 3kg of lye crystals for $20 CDN. They stocked it in the small town my inlaws live in.

Did you get it at a hardware store?

I got it at "Home Hardware", which seems to only exist in small towns here. :)

It was packaged under their own brand name, "Home Hardware Lye crystals".
