or you can build one yourself by cutting the top off of a 1 or 2 liter plastic soda bottle, flipping the top so that the narrow end points inside the body of the bottle, glue, tape, or affix the piece into place...and viola, you have a fully functional fish trap. just fill it with tank water, place some fish food inside it, and place it somewhere inside your tank where the fish of choice is likely to encounter it. once the fish enters the bottle it will become confused by the position of the hole and most likely will not be able to find the entrance/exit for quite some time. it's easy, cheap, and it works...

Can a hawkfish even fit through the opening of a 2 liter bottle?

I've used a tiny hook on a line on hawkfish. They're gulpers, so it's easier. You may try that if you can't get the trap right away. Hell, with most flame hawks you can practically scoop them out of the tank by hand at feeding time. Have you tried the "pelican method"?

...or: Feed by placing your food in a net, then placing the net in the tank. Do this consistently for several days. Most fish will eventually race to the net when they see it.

I don't know if this will work for a hawk fish, but it definitely worked for my damsel which evaded every method listed above.

The method is used by the folks at Atlantis Aquarium. A few hours after the lights go out on the tank and the fish are sleeping, quickly turn on all your lights. The fish are stunned/blinded by the light but do come out usually within 5 minutes. Then you can easily net the little guy.

I'll be trying to catch my blue tang tomorrow morning. I'm thinking about the hook method? I'm not very confident it'll work. She's pretty timid.

GET THAT FISH OUT

GET THAT FISH OUT

I THINK THAT THE FISH HOOK IDEM COULD BE EASING,BRIAN WERE YOU JOKING OR HAVE YOU REALLY USED A FISHHOOK,TROUT HOOKS ARE NICKLE AND WOULDNT BE AS DAMAGING AS OTHERS?,MIKID:rollface:

I managed to get "DOREY" out with a net. Minimal damage to the surrounding corals. I had a couple pieces of SPS snap off at the base, but nothing else. I was prepared to use a hook if it took much more effort/time with the net.:eek2:

Frag them SPS up wpnorton!

mikid: People really do use fish hooks. But like Underwaterparadise says, flatten the barb so you don't tear up your fish. Better they get off the hook.
