New to maintenance

Hello!

so it would seem I need a crash course in reef tanks. My exboyfriend built my son a 30 gallon tank with CoraLife t5 lights (I think). don't know how to start taking care of it myself do I need to purchase a water test kit? I have some candy corals some Mushroom corals a tomato clow lots of fiji live rock and a coral frag. my kiddo knows how to mix, test and add water I'm not sure about the chemical end. I'm saving all the information posted just not sure where to start... Thanks in advance!

I have found a TON of helpful information on YouTube form some very seasoned reefers describing their maintenance routines, tank setup, cycling, etc. I'd start there.

Would appreciate any suggestions you may have for setting up my new salt water fish tank, we are total newbies at this.....but are very excited in learning how to set one up...

thanks so much,

Love the condensed write up, great basic info that has really helped me wrap my head around the beginning stages of getting my reef system up and running.

Only thing I havent found, and it may be due to my bad searches, is there a chart showing what size heater per size tank? Or a rough guide....sure I could google it but I trust the people here =) I know it can be variable based on what lights your running but I have heard 3w per gallon, 4w, 5w and other recommendations so it can be a little confusing. I think I would only need to run it 3 months a year or so anyway.

This is great info but I have a new tank with both fish and coral more coral but I do have 4 fish it's only a 30 gal I was sold a pump with a circulation of 750 GPh I set it up and it look like it's to much its pushing the fish around store telling me it's fine I have been turning it on for a short time and turning it off

Fish in the ocean get shoved around. You might, however, have the outflow aimed at a difficult spot. You can break the flow up with a T nozzle, send it to a corner, but absolutely run that pump 24/7. Most tanks can go only a few hours without death due to oxy shortage should the pump go off. 750 is not too much for a 30. I ran a 950 in a 55.

I know this thread is ancient, but thank you very much for posting this information. It actually cleared up about 4 questions I have as I switch from freshwater to marine.

So glad I found this forum and this thread. So much info to take in from all the posts, but the original post already helped me a lot.
