How to use filter sock

I am about to purchase a filter sock, and am wondering how people mount them (ie under water, half-in/half-out). I'm also wondering the preference as far as filtering capability (microns). One more: :) How do people keep their return water from splashing all over the place when using a sock (or even without one)? Thanks!

i have my drain under the water level in my sump so no splashing.

i have my filter sock i think 5 micron placed over the drain half way out of the water and will change it every couple days

I have mine tied around the ribbed tubing leading from my overflow to my sump. The tubing rests right below the surface of the water in the sump, so I guess my sock is sort of half in, half out of the water. I'll see if I can get a pic up in a bit.

Ok - thank you both! Unfortunately, my drain hose ends just above the waters' surface, so I need to find a way to stop the splash.

Drain should be under the surface an inch or two. 100 Micron and as large as you can fit for the sock type. Have the sock so that if it gets dirty and overflows, it does so in the sump.

You can always add an extention to the drain. I put on a "Reverse Durso" on mine which sits in the filter sock which is half in and half out of the water. The drain comes down, T's off and on the branch I added a 90 degree elbow, capped it and drilled a small hole to let the air escape. I also T'd off the bottom of the drain and added a 2 inch piece to each side. The significantly quieted down everything.
