Hydor Koralia 4 Question

Just a quick question, I'm sure it's been answered but, I don't feel like searching all over for the simple answer:)

Will these pumps work with a controller, such as the Red Sea Wavemaster? and, have all of the bugs been worked out of the #4 models? (I know that was 2 Questions :D )

Thanks for any help!

I turned on my Koralia 4 yesterday and took about 4 seconds for it to smooth out and stop rattling. During the rattle process, the protecting cover blew off and went behind the rocks. It took quite a while with a custom bent coat hanger to retrieve the pieces that came off.

I love the incredible flow from the Koralia's but why do they have to start this way. Sometimes they start smooth and quiet but other times they rattle like nothing else.

They work with a Seio controller because the Seio doesnt totally cut off power. I have 2 Koralia 4s running with the Seio and its great!

i have 2 koralia 3 running with a reefkeeper 2, they alternate every 6 minutes, i do get a little noise every so often, but they work fine, i dont see any reasons to hook them up to a wave controller, good luck

sana

I turned my Koralia vertical to release trapped air prior to plugg-in per instructions and I didn't have any vibrations/shacking. Just an idea???

Hi Matt,

Can you give us a little more detail, or is there nothing to it?!
You just plug the Koralias into the Seio Controller and off you go?

See I need to control my Koralias (6 of them) as much as possible, but a regular wavemaker has serious flaws:

1) Fish, snails etc will enter the pump when it is resting and then will become fish food once it starts again, and/or the pump will be destroyed.

2) Koralias are not really meant to start & stop periodically since they will burn out MUCH sooner than later, plus they click a lot once they start in the opposite direction, scaring the heck out of everyone in the tank.

The Seio controller from what I gather kills the pumps to 50% and then up to 100% so both (1) and (2) points above are void.

Looks like I'll be going with K2's or K3's for my 75G. Still haven't decided what to do about the controller issue... Seio controllers are running around $150.

Yes, the Seio controller changes from 50% to 100% so 1 and 2 are void. You simply plug them in and set the controller. You can only put 2 powerheads in the controller though.
The only thing is to use the on off switch (Seio) when putting the powerheads in/out as it can blow a fuse.

Matt, is there a chance you help out with a little 'experiment'?

I need to find out if I can plug 2 koralias in each channel of the controller (I know there are only two plugs on the controller, but I was thinking of using a small extension on each controller plug, those with 2-4-6 plugs on each of them, and then plug two korallias on each extension, for a total of four). Each two Koralias of the same pair, will work on the same program, but each pair will work on opposite programs like the controller is dictating.

Is there ANY chance at all you try this?

If not, -which I understand totaly- can you read -and report back to us- the maximum power (volts and amps, or watts) that the controller says it can handle on each of its plugs?

I wouldn't advise putting multiple power heads throught the Seio. It is designed for a single, low wattage power head going through each input. If you increase the wattage I am sure it will blow the fuse or worse.
I run 2 out of 3 powerheads through the Seio and I get excellent random flow (though I have got a Wavysea aswell)
If you want all of your powerheads on the Seio I'm afraid you're going to have to buy multiple units.

FWIW, if you have a shallow tank with alot of sand be warry of the koralia's. There great for bb and tall tanks but for 24" or shorter they will blow your sand all over the place. There very wide. I would suggest the mj mods like the sureflow or eco. I like them much more. I practically had to build my tank around the k4 when running it in my 125g. There nice pump's but dang are they wide! Just my thoughts

Hmmm.... good info! thanks! I wish someone local had them so I could see them in action!

Feel free to pop over to Thailand and check mine out

Can I use 2 different power supplies, one with full voltage, the other with lower voltage and a relay to switch the power supplies?

Thats essentially what the Seio does. You could do if you feel confident in such DIY projects. I don't know enough about electric projects to recommend doing so.
If you do it let us know the results.

That sounds good Matt. I have a whole bunch of power supplies, speed controllers and electrical stuff for model railroad which I found they'r quite useful for aquarium. I'm going to have a pair of K'4 soon then will try it out. I'll be back with results

Well I think I found a way around things -at least on paper I did.
The Seio/Taam/Wave/Marea (call it what you want) controller is able to run up to 2 M2600 Seio pumps, which are 55W each!
The Koralias 4's are 11W for our 220V versions in Europe(LOL its 8,5W for the US 110V versions) so in theory at least, each channel of the Seio Controller should be able to hold at least 3 Koralia 4s (3X11W=33W well bellow the 55W of the Seio M2600) heck, it is probably even capable of 4, if not 5 (!!!) of them, but to be on the safer side, I'd say 3 Koralia 4's will be OK -till I test it at least.

Anyway, thanks for your input Matt! ;)

Correct luke, I couldn't agree more with you. My tank is a tad taller, with water level at 23,5". Also, I am running all my powerheds on the back plane, pointing either to the left plane or the right plane, alternating, creating a swirl motion inside the tank. The front side of the lr is being blasted from the return pumps through an OceansMotions 4-way.
I think I will have 'sand storms' in some spots, put I think rearranging the rock a little or lowering the Koralias closer to the bottom will resolve things. We shall see.

Me like! Do tell more Xuan!
Mainly, since I am clueless of relays, can you point out an appropriate relay to do that switching between power supplies?
