hydrometer

I have an instant ocean hydrometer and I keep getting an inconsistent reading, I think its bubbles on the arm that's causing this. Has anyone else had this problem?

Same thing here. I cover the little hole on the side of the hydrometer (some models may not have this) with my thumb and thump the front or back fairly hard (like I'm checking a melon for ripeness at the grocery store...though I have much less success with this than with getting the air bubbles off).

I have had this problem as well, ever since I've been using that hydrometer. I usually just set it on a flat surface and flick it, like DM said, about 3 or 4 times and that takes care of it...

It took my a little while to figure that out. At first, I thought I had totally messed up the salt concentration!

They are very inconsistent and generally inaccurate. They give you a general idea of your sg but should not be relied upon for any degree of pecison .

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a refractometer to me.

I tell you, I get a rush everytime I use mine......why I feel like Magellan looking through my spyglass......even Copernicus some days as if gazing at the heavens.......Yes, Its a day to be celebrated in every Reefers life when they first peer into that eyepiece and see the promise land.

:D  Wow.wait till you get a conductivity meter with digital readouts.

I am 7 months into this hobby and i bought a 6.99 hydrometer had my salinity checked out at my lfs and it was 1.030 I went on foster and smith bought a refractometer fo 44 bucks best purchase i ever made eventually ill go digital but just got laid off and now im wondering how im going to do w/c and buy salt

This sounds like an absolutely MUST have. A brand new toy that has answers!!! Errr, what does it do?

It's also called a slainity monitor. Not a must have but nice and reliable.

That is really true, i had the same problem and got a refractometer and presto it finally got my salinity right. Hydrometers are terrible in comparison and a refractometer is totally worth the $$$

I have two IO hydrometers...they both read the same.

Save your fingernail some stress and poke the arm down with a
pencil or something. When it hits bottom the bubbles fall off.

I disagree. If you are serious about this hobby, you need a refractometer and calibration fluid.

I always found instant ocean hydrometers to be fairly accurate / consistent ..... but they are kind of a pain also. They must be washed after each use and acid washed occasionally and before you check reading, take a pencil and tap the arm with the eraser a few times and make sure all bubbles are off it.
I do own a refractometer and pinpoint calibration fluid now and it's so much easier although more expensive. But hydrometers.. both floating and swing arm served me well for many years.
