Hyposalinity Treatment Log

05/11/2011

Thought my ammonia problems were behind me, but tests yesterday revealed otherwise. Did another 20g water change, seems I will be doing this every few days at least for the foreseeable future.

pH still no problem, the yellow who nearly died is now eating a bit but still fragile. I hope it can pull through.

8 days in, little less than 3 weeks to go in hypo, no signs of ich still!

Back from vacation, once again United airlines gave me a free night sleeping in an airport. :mad2:

Anyway, back home now. My aquarium keeper did a great job maintaining things while i was away, even doing a 25% water change for me with water I had pre-mixed and ready.

Everyone is still alive. The yellow tang that had developed a black dot is active but the black dot has grown into a large blotch!! This looks to be fungal or bacterial, with some visible growth off the side of the body. I picked up some paraguard and have dosed to see if this will help. i will once again need to watch pretty closely to make sure this isn't too stressful for the fish. So far they seem to care less.

I am 2.5 weeks into hypo, and about 4 weeks no fish in my DT.

Salinity and pH have proven very easy to control still, with no problems here.

My water is now quite cloudy, likely because I had my helper add a piece of nori every day...instead of every other day as I had been doing.

made a stupid move, putting a paper towel between the HOB filter and the wall to reduce the vibration. the paper towel managed to touch the water in the filter and in 1.5 days about 3 gallons managed to leech out this way onto my floor!! Crazy!

anyway, still plugging along, can't wait to get some fish back in my DT!:fish1:

4 out of 5. :(

At 3 weeks into the hyposalinity one of my yellow tangs has developed an extremely nasty growth. I cannot tell if it is something that got out of the skin from the inside or just something growing on the outside. It's real ugly. It still swims ok, not eating much if at all for the past few days. I am now dosing with paraguard, fish are not showing any added signs of stress, so I will continue. I don't believe I can let this linger long though as I am worried about infecting the others if this thing is contagious. I am struggling with the idea of euthanizing it.

Outside of that the other 4 fish are still thriving, the sailfin seems especially fat and happy.

Water has become cloudy, possibly bacterial outbreak as my nitrogen cycle establishes. I am combatting this with more frequent 50% water changes.

One more week in hyposalinity and i can start raising it back up until finally getting them back into their true home, hopefully once and for all. Sadly, we may end up 1 crew member short.

Unfortunately, the tang did not pull through. I came home yesterday to find it nearly dead. I had some clove oil and used that to put it to sleep and out of it's misery. Upon examination it was obvious that the infection originated internally and ate its way ate. The poor thing literally had a hole in its body. I am sad about the loss, but at the same time good that it is no longer suffering.

My water started to clear up now, and the remaining 4 fish seem to be healthy as ever. I will need to watch the sailfin and other yellow to ensure they don't start fighting due to the reduction in numbers.

I had hoped to make it through without any losses, but knew as a newbie that was unlikely.

Last day of hypo!

My tank is doing great, the water has cleared up, inhabitants are happy and fat. It is almost like having a sick fish in the tank was bringing them down.

Starting tomorrow I will be able to slowly bring the salinity back up to 1.025(my DT level). Another couple weeks of observation and I will reach 8 weeks with no fish in my DT.

It seems my HOB filter is finally working well, ammonia levels are staying at 0. I will have to watch is it remains stable as salinity rises.

I am actually going to have to start today. found ich on my powder brown last night. so i set up an emergency hospital last night and will put him in tonight. hopefully I wont have to segregate all my fish...

Good luck. Just remember you have to treat every fish and leave your main tank with no fish for 8 weeks for the treatment to be useful. This is the real hard part!

It is a different type of bacteria at a sg of 1.009 than at 1.026. I think the mid teens is where the changeover starts to happen.

I've used Hyposalinity before and didnt experience any spikes in ammonia. Just test daily or buy one of those ammonia alert tabs. Sometimes using too much chemical can hinder the biological process, as the bacteria never gets the chance to change the ammonia to nitrite because the chemicals are removing everything.

Thanks Cougaran, hopefully I don't have any spikes on the way up. I started with an uncycled filtration system, so that is why I struggled and ultimately lost 1 fish I believe. They aren't made go through that cycle, happy I kept most of them alive. Since about 3.5 weeks in I haven't had any further issues with spikes.

Anyway, salinity starts the slow journey up tonight.

Since it needs to be done slowly hopefully the new bac can take hold as the other expires. That's what I'm hoping for you. Just wanted to let you know that it's a different type so be on guard :)

On the way back up.

Salinity is now at 1.014, going up a bit less than .0015 a day, as salinity increases, the daily increase will be less and less, since I am drawing from the same pool of premade water at 1.026.

I didn't really expect it, but the fish, especially the yellow tang seem a heck of a lot happier at the new salinity. They are more active, and behaving more like they did in the DT. The yellow is eating more aggressively, instead of waiting for it to float by.

The end is in site, that ich better be gone or I might kill someone!

June 18th can't come soon enough!

Going slowly, salinity up to 1.017 now. Fish are loving life, getting more and more active....eating well and still ich free!

Less than 2 weeks until I can start reintroduction.

Seeing as there are 4 fish, I am going to have to take it slow to not shock my system too much. I am hesitating between the clowns first , or a tang first. I want to put one of the tangs ASAP so that it can start eating the algae!!!!!

I am thinking if I put the yellow tang that is fairly timid first, then the sailfin a week later.....and finally the 2 clowns that it may work well.

Other option is clowns first.
