I was once told the Thruway Authority intentionally over spends knowing they can get assistance. If they don't request the assistance it may become unavailable in the future.

That buffalo thruway booth is a massive road block. I used to tow our fifth wheel through there a lot heading to the track to ride - used to back up for miles on end. Strangely people still paid by hand quite a bit, maybe out of towers, who knows
 
California has taken EZ pass to the next level...the freeways out there have sections, with HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lanes requiring 2 or more people in the vehicle...BUT some roads also have an EXPRESS lane, which allows you to drive faster (less congestion) than the 'regular' section... the catch? You must have an fast-trak pass, and be changed to use this lane! BTW the toll changes, based on the time of day, that you drive (more at rush hour)!
 
i'm fine with not paying for stripmalls and gov bs. driving out west,a rest stop does not have 31 flavors. your lucky if they have restroom and a vending machine. toll roads suck, they have since roman times and the same excuses have been used.

Route 5 takes me to where I need to be East and West. 81 takes me North to South. Other than that I avoid the Thruway, never ending construction, deadly accidents of idiots driving 100+ and others driving 45mph w/o cautions on. I'd rather plan a different route, a bit of scenery, and plan accordingly. Enough of my money goes to the state, no need to pay for things I don't use. Except when I get to the city, then my mean city driving comes into play and I fit right in.

This !!! I read somewhere that the tolls paid off what they were intended for years and years ago..Now it's just another tax :mad2:

Be careful, Gary! They clock your speed as you go through them.

My buddy's EZ Pass was suspended (and then he was fined repeatedly for using a suspended EZ Pass), b/c his daughter whipped through a 5 MPH EZ pass lane at 45 MPH! :fun2:
 
The high speed EZPass in Houston is great (probably all of Texas, but I was just in Houston). The thruway lanes split off to the left of the regular toll booths and the ezpass readers are suspended above the thruway, no speed reduction necessary. Plus, no slowing down to navigate your vehicle thru narrow tollbooths. Which from the pic above people on the 190 can't do at all!! :D

And if you don't come to a complete stop when using your EZPass on a regular collection lane you'll get a warning. Got one of those already!!

good point, Scott. On I-90's current EZ PASS only lanes we currently must slow down to a posted limit (5, 10, 20MPH) but there's no need to slow down in NJ's high speed lanes. It sounds like they have the same type in Houston......

I've camped in Ocean View (Cape May area) all my life. Kayaked the saltwater marsh and intracoastal waterway around Wildwood this time.
I still haven't been to Nick's Lake.

I wish I had a good pic of high speed EZ PASS to show you folks but the methodology (basically) separates slow cash paying lanes from the high speed lanes.
EZ PASS customers would (basically) keep travelling on I-90 at full speed. No toll booths. The only indication that you paid a toll through EZ PASS is a sign posted on the shoulder of the expressway.
 
I'm guessing that these high-speed EZPass lanes don't accommodate "non-highway" type of roads off of the thruway, and that they're just for the major thoroughfares? (I'm thinking of exits like the Canandaigua, where you're not exiting onto a 2-lane highway like 490 or 390.)
 
Take I90 out of Chicago, and they penalize you for not having whatever their pass is called by making you sit in one of two or three pay lanes off to the side while the regular lanes keep traveling full speed. My truck towing a 16' livestock trailer too will put many cars behind it especially when there is a wee bit of a grade to climb.

I-PASS it's called. There are also many on/off ramps that are unmanned that have a change basket. You would have to carry $10 in change if you drive around the Chicago area without the I-PASS. What is nice is my EZ-PASS works all the way to and into Chicago, and those high speed tolls really save time. One thing I know with the I-PASS is they really bend you over if it doesnt read your pass. It is up to the driver to monitor (online) their tolls. You get fined for everyday you don't pay, and they wait months to send you a notice/bill.
