I cannot figure out how to work this stupid skimmer!!!!!!!

I got this air-stone driven skimmer from a friend in Alabama that had to take down her tank, and i cannot frigure how to work it. It is about 1 1/2' long and has two tubes, one inside the other, and a cup with a cone in it at the top. I hooked it up, and put it in , and the adjustable pump that she sent with it, i thought was too little power for it, so i hooked it up to one of my pumps, only for a 30 gallon tank, so not too much air. I also hooked them both up to a gang valve to control the air-flow. It is soo sensative. It seems there is no midpoint between an overflowing skimmer and a skimmer that produces bubbles that could never think about reaching the top of the collection cup. IDK anything about skimmers, as i have never had one before, but is there a depth that the skimmer should sit at in my tank, or certain air intake, or IDK what to ask really, but if anyone can help me, that would be great, thank you

most skimmers run at 6-8 inches of water. you might want to let it work itself in on the setting that seems to never make it to the top. then adjust it a little daily. might have to get a different air valve or you could get a real skimmer LOL

Skimmers that are driven by air stones aren't very effective. I would go with a venturi skimmer.

Well, i have threehang on filters, each rated for a 60 gallon tank, on my 29 gallon. It stays relatively clean, and i was not wanting to buy a skimmer, this was just given to me, and i thought i was just going to try it out, but it didnt work...lol, and thanks, i have been spelling "a lot" like "alot" since forever, so i wil ahve to correct that. Thank you guys

Try buying a pump where you can control the output of air. Then you can adjust the amount of bubbles being produced in your skimmer.

also if its wooden air stones they are only good for so long.

if it worked with the other pump before it should work with it now - it has certain requirements and your pump probably isnt what it needs - unless she didnt want to give you the pump that came with it and she just gave you a different one ?

She gave me the pump she used, but IDK what level to put it at in my tank, i know my friends air driven skimmer had a water level line, but this one doesnt haveone, maybe it did at one point, but it doesnt now.
