I Can't Sleep!

The pump in my sump is so loud I can't sleep. It goes from very quiet to so loud it will wake you up in the middle of the night.
Can someone recommend a super quiet pump? This one generates way too much vibration. Sorry, I cant remember the manufacturer of the one I have. The tank is a 90 gal reef.

try to put some rubber feet on it, maybe soft plumb it also. if that fails get an eheim!, and do the same.

are you sure its not rubbing against a pipe or something else?

i am confused how it would go from quiet to loud.

the overflow in my system is a little loud but i sleep like a bear. my girlfriend said she liked the noise since it reminded her of waves of the ocean and rocked her to sleep.

The current pump sits in the sump. It came with a thin rubber pad to cushion...but it is worthless. It is simple with a large impeller on the inside. It will be quiet for a bit and then just goes nuts. Thanks for all the replys. I have to solve this today!

I have used silicone hot pads to keep return pumps, skimmer pumps and reactor pumps from vibrating against the sump bottom and making alot of noise.
But some pumps are just too noisey.
Try something like these.

The ehiem pumps are one of the quietest pumps going, so that may be a good idea.

If your using hard plumbing try using a small piece of tubing to attach the pump to the plumbing. It will reduce vibration. Also some use a ziploc bag filled partially with sand, placed under the pump.

Thanks everyone... I will try a combination of your suggestions and if all else fails I will buy a new pump.

never thought about the sand trick, nice. i agree with all the above add some vinyl tubing and call it good. the danner mag-drive pumps come with a self adhesive pad that sucks, maybe that is what you have. i had a mag 12 and it was super quiet but i had to use vinyl tubing.

I have a friend who cannot stand hearing his system at all and has gone through 20 different pumps in his search for silence. He has been happy with his eheim 1262. He was also relatively happy with his ampmaster dolphin - but a bad seal caused a leak which made him get rid of it. Hope you can solve your problem.

I set my mag 18 on a chemi pure- same with my skimmer pump. Soft line will help- also an external pump can be quieter- or at least more of a whir than grind!

Two words

TUNZE SILENCE

and be done. They are so quiet you won't even think its on. I kid you not. I would also suggest as other have. Vinyl tubing not hard plumbing. Lifereef has the most pliable tubing but strong enough to keep its shape.
