i dont think that is the case. according to what i have read so far, once unsealed the reagent has a short shelf life, lasting only 2 months, So whether you use it or not it will expire every 2 months.
Can I test more or less frequently than that?
Yes, within limits. There are operational limits on both ends. Obviously the test takes time so only so many can be fit in a day. Also, once unsealed, the reagents will have a more shortened lifespan. That said we are fairly confident that you should be able to run less tests and get two months out of one set of reagents.
Yeah, I recently saw that as well, I wonder why they only last 2 months compared to salifer that can last a few years.

if every other kit out there can last at least 1 yr after opening, trident does do any different than what we do with out hands. it takes X amount of water mixes it with X amount of reagent and calculates results (as far as i know) so i dont see why reagent cant last longer like other kits.
This is my take on this... Unlike other reagents where you open them, use what you need, then re-seal the container, the reagents that are used in the Trident are opened and then remain open. They have to have a small air hole in order to allow the dosing head to pull reagent, otherwise it would create a vacuum.
With that said, I wonder if Neptune thought about using soft packs that would collapse as reagent is pull from it, which in this case could be air tight.
i agree, from what i saw its a small plastic cup/bottle looking container with lid.
Wait if.... you just put the solutions in your own sealed test cups, and just poured solutions into the trident test kits as needed. Wonder if this would work.

But think about this... Terrance stated in the video he did about the Trident
that it would test Alk 4 time a day, Ca & Mg twice a day, and the reagent cost
would be about $20 a month. That would be ~ 120 Alk, 60 Ca and 60 Mg tests. That's a lot of tests. Do any one of you test that much now? And if so what are your costs?
It was also stated that you could reduce the testing intervals which would lower the cost/month even further.
So if $20/month testing your tank that many time seems like a lot, I think you are in the wrong hobby.

that is a lot of testing. honestly i check CAL once or twice a month and MAG maybe once a month or once every other month. so to pay $40 for cal and $40 for mag will be a complete waste of money as they sell the reagent in 2 month bottles ($20/month). For me $80 for 2-4 tests every 2 months is not reasonable. ALK is a different story. i do test ALK once every 3 days so that makes 16-20 test in 2 months time. Which too for me is not reasonable to pay $40 for 20 tests while my hanna checker can do 25 test for $8.
Due to low amounts of testing on CAL and MAG if i am inclined to buy any monitor/testing equipment it would be for ALK only and that too for me does not sound appealing due to high cost with KH guardian being the cheapest at $500. Honestly as stable my tanks chemistry is its really not on my list of purchase.
But everyone does things differently and would like to know their levels on daily basis or even every 4-6 hourly basis. Only 2 types of hobby'ist would need that much testing in my opinion. 1. Newbies that are trying to get things stable or 2 Advance hobby'ist that just want to make sure things are extremely stable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but he states that they will sell a reagent "Kit" that contains a 2 month supply for $40. He even goes on to say that you can reduce testing in half, so that would further lower the monthly cost to $10 for all 3 test combined. At that price, why not test Alk twice a day (morning before lights come on, then at night just before lights go out) and Ca & Mg once a day.
For what it's worth, I would consider myself in the advance class, and to be honest, I haven't tested my tank in over 1½ years. I do daily AWC of 2 gallons on a 80 gallon tank, run a Ca reactor, and just go by how the tank looks.
Do I need the Trident... heck no, Do I want it cause I'm a tech junkie and for the "Cool" factor... Oh Heck Yes!

Thanks - that link has been there for a while. I don't think it's indicitive that it's any closer to shipping. Some news would be nice as Q1 is just about over!
i checked few websites that talk about Trident. regarding reagents it says kit for $40 so you are probably right. But i would still like to see separate reagents for sale otherwise cal and mag will most likely goto waste if you are checking alk lot more than other 2.
And yes it would be a cool toy to have.

Well we'll just will come right out and say it — it looks like we are slipping about three months on this product. This means that our Neptune Systems Insiders (NSI) should be able to get their hands on a Trident in 2-3 months. Our development teams have been working non-stop on this product. Technologically everything is rock solid - we've just have had some hiccups in component sourcing and manufacturing areas. A new production prototype of the Trident will be shown at Reefapalooza (RAP) in Orlando on April 7-8 so if you want to see it in the flesh, make sure to come out to that event.

In other product development news, we have something great to announce. At RAP we will be showing off a beta version of Apex Fusion that has Amazon Alexa support. We plan on making voice control and IoT integration a key feature of the Apex going forward and this is the first step. We are starting with Alexa and then from there we will be examining the viability of Apple Homekit (Siri) as well as other voice tech out there. We will be demoing Alexa control and feedback at the booth at RAP so be sure to stop on by for a demo. Voice integration is not just a gimmick, there are some really helpful ways it takes your Apex to the next level and delivers on our promise of “less hassle”. And yes, it will work with an Apex Classic and Apex Jr.
AI HYDRA HD/ and PrimeHD SUPPORT
We will be releasing beta version of support for these lights in the coming weeks. No additional hardware is required. We will be demoing this at RAP as well.
FINALLY, APEX BASE UNITS WILL GO ON SALE SOON!
Since the introduction of our latest Apex model in 2016, a number of our customers have asked us to simply sell the Apex base unit separately so that they could swap out their Apex Classic and begin running the newer version. Other customers wanted to own one as a backup unit. Until now the incredible demand for complete Apex systems was such that we could not set aside base units alone to be sold for these purposes. The day has finally here where the Apex Base unit will be sold on its own. Not only that, there will also be an introductory discount. The new Apex base unit will retail at $399.95 and come with a set of calibration solutions.
