I Fragged My Carpet Last Night

why cut them up? to sell frags?

just curious

The reason was to learn how to or if we can propagate this type of anemone so we don't have to collect them from the wild. If the other half had lived I probably would have given it away.

I must say though, approaching two months and the carpet is still in the process of healing. Wow... Definitely not for the feint of heart to try this.

I am curious. What do you think the outcome would have been if you split the colony directly in half?
Thanks

I think the other half probably would have been OK even the way I cut it (I meant to cut it directly in half) if I hadn't let the sump get low and pumped it full of air. It was looking pretty good befor that. However, it has not been an easy or quick process for this anemone like it seems to be for the BTAs. I have really had to baby them.

Most people who have studied them in nature have reported that they do not asexually reproduce. I have personally seen a mertens carpet in a wholesalers tank that had two oral disks and one foot. I don't know if this individual was splitting, recovering from injury or was some sort of anemone conjoined twin.

Some anemones are broadcast spawners and release eggs and sperm into the water like corals do.
Some anemones males broadcast sperm which is taken in by the females who then fertilize the eggs internally. BTAs then release planula larvae which once they find an attachment, become little anemones. In giant carpets (S. gigantea) the babies develop internally and are released as little tiny minatures of the parents.
Interesting article. The first part is about bubble tips in BTAs. The bottom is about reproduction.

really good thread. i too hope to see "captive bred anemones" as often as i see cb clownfish. hehe.

im sure i can, but wonder if my flower anemone can be fraged.

Since this got bumped up I might as well give an update.
The surviving half is doing very well. As you might remember the cut edges didn't mesh up like they were supposed to but instead created a "swirl". Tissue then began growing up from the column to mesh the two cut sides together. The swirl is no longer evident as the two sides now have new tissue connecting them. The interesting part is the the new tissue on the column and the disk, does not yet have any orange spots like the areas around it.

On a different but related note, I was at a wholesaler's yesterday(no, I can't get you anything) and they had a small (4-5") S. gigantea with a blue base and badly bleached tentacles, a common color combo. The interesting thing was that this anemone had two completely seperate mouths. In addition, when I picked it up, the foot seemed like it was starting to split as well. There was a strip of very dense tissue running across the middle of the foot. Unfortunately, the anemone was not in very good shape and the rest of the carpets in the tank were all in some stage of "melting". I was sort of a good thing for me because I don't have any where to put another anemone anyway.

I know this thread has been inactive for 5 months now, but do you have pics to show the healing?!?!?

Thank you phender for being one of the first to try this.

Almost a year out, how is the anemone doing?

I just read the ENTIRE thread so I'm up to speed on where you left off. I was wondering how your anemone is doing and if the white face and skunk paired up.

I learned so much from this thread and I wanted to echo so many others in my appreciation.
