I got 2 new fish

I got 2 new fish friday, both from the collector I dove with last month while in HI.

I only have photos of one because my QT is only 6 gallon so I put one of the fish in a friends tank with some damsels. I got a golden dwarf moray and a small (under 3 inch) crosshatch trigger.

As soon as I can I'll get photos of the trigger, but here is the moray

The moray will go in my 24 nano, the trigger will end up in my 100 gal reef until she grows, then I hope to have a 225 mixed reef, if not I have a friend near my house who has a 500 gal FOWLR that I could put her in until I have a bigger tank.

I think you should look into getting a small banana eel once the golden eel gets adjusted. The banana's color is more more yellow.

wow love the eel. i think it would be really cool to see one in a reef, but they are away too exensive for me! lol.

Thanks guys, once I can put the trigger in my tank I'll get photos, maybe even sooner if I bring my camara to the trigger.

Hmmalkin, I have collected Gymnothorax melegris (goldentail eel, same species as banana eels) that had great color, but the tank I want to put this eel in is only 24 gals so even at 18 to 20 inches it would be too big.

I got a 4" cross hatch last week too :). They don't show their adult colors at this size, but I love his temperment :)

How much do they sell for or how much did I pay? I don't sell them because they don't come from where I collect, and I'm friends with the collector and there is no middle man so I paid less then half of wholesale.

I'll take a pic later today. philter4, what does your trigger eat? I tried all the frozen with mixed results (of course a little squid, but not as much as I'd like). Tried pellet which he seemed so so with too. You know what I finally found he likes? FLAKE! A whole smorge that the other fish are going wild for and he likes flake. Eats from the top and he doesn't hide in the rocks, he goes to sleep around the spray bar.

IanMNY, I used to collect for a living, but now just for myself and sometimes for friends. I go to HI at least 2 times a year and collect there as well.

Tcoral, I've only had mine for 3 days, but she is eating anything I put in the tank, frozen mysis, frozen brine with spirollina, cyclops, and spectrum pellets. I can't wait until she is here so I can watch her whenever I want, not just when I go to see her. I will get photos tomorrow and post.

how much you get for the eel?
You can find the Golden Dwarf Morays listed on ebay selling out of Hawaii for around $90, which is a steal of a price. Locally, I have seen them for around $180. There is a huge thread somewhere on RC about the GDM and the Hawaiian seller I mentioned.

I love my GDM, but am thinking hard about selling him to lighten my bioload. And it would be nice to have Peppermint shrimp again.

$90 is a great price, they generally run $125 wholesale, and $250 & up retail. The collector I get them from charges 60 to 100 to suppliers depending on how many he has and how many people are asking for them.

Mark, how big of a peppermint shrimp did yours eat, I have a lot of ornamental shrimp in the tank I'm eventually putting him in and there are several very expensive ones I don't want to lose. I could put him in a different tank, I just have to cover it.

hmm, they were about 1.5" tall. I had 4 of them and I know they were eaten because they were not in my system when I moved in the summer.

I've never needed a cover for my tank. The GDM has never ventured close to the water surface. I've had him in uncovered tanks for about 9 months.

Mine has gotten into the filter of the nano he is in and the only way is through the grates (not possible) or over the top, there is a bit of space between the back wall and the hood, so I'm keeping him covered.
