I Got ICH

back before I knew better.......I had ich. My tomini came in with it, and I could see some on all of my fish. Couldn't catch them out without dismantling the whole tank. So I soaked the food in garlic and fed them over a few hour period. Ich went away, came back a few weeks later (their hatching/lifespan as I understand it) but not as bad. Went away a few days later. 7 months later there has never been another sign. As I understand it if you can go a year or so without another outbreak the ich parasite will die-off. Not sure if I trust that or not. I'll probably hypo and definetly QT before I set up my next system.

well, i'm going to do fresh garlic plus the medicated flakes and I added a 40watt UV. We'll see what happens.

Kybreos,
I just wanted to interject here... There are many many theories on what to do with ick, and for the purpose they are serving, they are all pretty much correct, but you HAVE to figure out which purpose you opt for. What I mean is, do you want means of control or means of elimination.

Elimination is incredibly tedious, time consuming and can be expensive (with the QT set up and all)

Control are daily implemented little things you do that change your husbandry.

Hypo and copper if done correctly from start to finish are proven "cures" of the parasite.

Garlic, UV sterilizer, stress free environment, etc, are means of controlling the parasite.

Choose which you want to do, control or eliminate, then go from there.

I agree with Joe (poknsnok) on this one, coppersafe is the way to go for ich. I have also had good results with it. As for Freed, why is somebody in Indiana here attacking John especially when he has never been to the store or even met John? Isn't there some local reefers in your area for you to converse with instead coming here and bashing a really good person unfairly? As for greedy, that is total bullcrap. One time a fish that I got at another store got sick, John GAVE me the pill to treat the fish because they only came in like 50 or 100 bottles and I couldn't use that many in a lifetime. That is one example of the dozens of times he has helped me out in ways other LFS wouldn't even consider. Anybody that has been there knows that John doesn't even carry snake oils or anything that isn't proven to work. Now that I've thrown my $.02 in, where is mlivvy with that popcorn? :)

The thing for me is that I dont have a QT setup already and my tank is a full blown reef so I had to move fast. I got the medicated flakes from FAOIS and instead of buying the garlic guard I just use real garlic and I purchased a UV. 5 years ago I had an ich outbreak in my 125reef the fish made it with just water changes and fresh garlic plus the medicated flakes. My one sailfin tang that I still have thats been with me for 5yrs now doesnt have any ich. He has an immunity to it i believe since he made it through that bout 5yrs ago. Im thinking that if I stay up on my husbandry my fish will make it.

Hey Guys....it's OK Freed is a product of his geological area in which he resides! I once lived there and can tell you first hand that he probably doesn't have a clue as to what he is doing with his NOT so great saltwater tank. Not his fault that he is ignorant, just not a lot of great resources like FAOIS near him. To give you an example....he said hypo is the "CHEAPEST" solution....that just tells you that he DOES NOT have LIVE ROCK in his tank simply because it costs a lot to ship live rock that far.
My suggestion to him is: for him to go back to FWMAS or INDMAS as that is where he belongs....*notice the number of posts in those two reef club forums....enough said! KR
howeroll, flroidareefer.... He went running w/ his tail between his legs back to his "Indiana forums" I guess I really shouldn't blame him for his unknowing of the fact that around here "John IS the man!" But, to me when you have no idea what you are talking about or have nothing nice to say then I say nothing at all. JMO

I must say John handled that as professionally as usuall. He is a better person than me if it were me I would have really torn into that guy. I almost wanted to do it for him.

okay- update time.
No losses, my Sailfin tang is still ich free, the wrasses seem to have cleared up, the Orange shoulder tang is ich free, the blue tang and the achilles are still showing signs but it is definately better than before. So I'm going to keep up the feeding regime.

Hyposalinity is a very complicated treatment and should only be attempted by folks with EXTREME patience. So far I have successfully hypo'd a Vlamingi, Naso, and Thompsons Tangs, 2 Genicanthus Angels, a bunch of Chromis, a Royal Gramma, and 2 Yellow Wrasses, all which went into the 390.
I don't think that hypo is the best preventive method for all fish. This weekend, I will be picking up a Copperband Butterfly from John at FAOIS. This fish is not highly susceptible to Ich, so it will get a mild Coppersafe treatment and be watched for a few weeks and then into the display it goes.

My turn to chime in on my John story...
As most of you know John had that great 20% off sale a couple of weekends ago. I was excited about picking up a blueberry gorgonian. So excited in fact that I forgot to ask about the care and placement of it. I posted questions and John saw it. He promptly PM'd me and asked who had helped me, he was disapointed that I had not been properly helped. I explained that I really did not get his name and that I should have asked more questions but they were packed and I had felt guilty about taking up so much time. He told me that it did not matter, that I should have been given all the attention and details on how to care for it. He then explained how to care for and the best placement of the Blueberry...and then he said if I thought it was too much for me to return it to the store for a full refund. Now that does not sound like greed to me. That sounds like someone more into providing the products/livestock he supplies a safe and happy home. He has a customer for life in me. :):D
