I Got ICH

Man, this sucks - I got my tank up and running, corals are acclimated fish are fat and healthy. Then I wake up the other day and all my fish have Ich. Im going to try this medicated food for a couple days but I think I'm going to have to catch all the fish and setup a hospital tank for them. Does anyone know how long you have to leave the tank fallow for the ich to die off?

The process is take the fish into a QT, drop the Salinity to 1.011 slowly, leave it there for 7 days, I believe. Then raise it back to the 1.026

ALL fish need to be out of the display a minimum of 8 weeks for the ICH to run its cycle in the display.

If it's any help - I went through two bouts of ick.

The first one I yanked the fish out into quarantine, fresh water dips, coppered, etc. Really stressed the fish out and I lost one. Took several months to kick it and spent alot of $ on various medications. I made the mistake of blindly listening to someone who thought they were an expert who was telling me what to do with the fish and insisted that I tear my tank apart, remove all the sand, etc. to get rid of the ick. All that did was blow up my happy system and my nitrates shot way up (I had no nitrate problem prior to that) and I went through an EXTENDED bout battling nuisance algae.

After that I did my own research and came to my own conclusion - there's gonna be ick - it's a matter of whether or not my fish are healthy enough to resist it.

The second round came after I got some new fish - one of which I knew had ick already. No, I don't always do things by the book :)

I tried a different route. Left them in the tank, but did big water changes every week, and fed them the best food I could to build them up. A couple of times I also added a supplement to the water to help with slime coat. In other words - did what I could to boost the health of the fish and their environment, just like I would do with myself if I felt like I was coming down with something. They kicked it themselves pretty darn quick without all the trauma drama and no losses of anything. That was pretty good considering the ick was worse than the first time!

Couple of weeks later there was a slight flare up (I assume life cycle of the ick) and I continued what I was doing for about 6 weeks, even though I saw no symptoms. Ick disappeared from all the fish and hasn't returned yet. That was over a year ago.

I'm certainly no expert, but that's what did the trick for me. Hope that's helpful to you in your research.

Feed your fish Garlic Guard....it works great and gets rid of the ick....just like annette said ....the fish need to be healthy and garlic is a way to boost immune system. had a blue hippo get ick and learned about garlic....put him in 10 gal qt and fed all fish in both tanks the garlic for 2 weeks...the hippo got rid of ick in just 3 days. None of the other fish ever got it. I use garlic guard periodically now. I just add it to the frozen food when thawing. KR

Do you buy the garlic liquid in the supermarket or fishstore?
I just leave the fishes in the main tank to recover on their own. Tank guarded by cleaner shrimps.

Except that the ich parasite is too large to be damaged by most of the UV sterilizers that people use.

hmm, so many ways to skin a cat- i'm going to get some garlic guard and do some water changes. if i see improvements i'll stick with it. I hate trapping the fish because i think it's real stressfull on them. i also want to try some neon gobies, anyone have any exp?
ty all for your responses, i'll keep you updated

that makes no sense.

If it doesn't kill the organism, it prevents it from reproducing, or in the case of Ich. it will keep it from advancing in life cycles (for the very few that survive). It has nothing to do with the size. Aslo depends on the flow rate and exposure time to the parasite in the trophic stage.....

Before I did research, I too thought there is always going to be ICH in the tank. I asked around to better my knowledge about the parasite and got a really good link which is the one oldsaint posted. There is some good info there.

All I can say ...is that I have been using the garlic guard since the hippo got ich and he has never gotten ick again. I know they say that tangs getting ick is a VERY common thing. Since the ick problem I also run a UVS on my display tank but I have the flow set pretty fast. Good luck and hope the ick goes packin' quick for you. KR
