I have a question

I have my water mixing area in the laundry room. I use a 32 gallon rubbermaide trash can to mix my water in. After I do a water change I refill the can with fresh to/di water and throughout the week I add salt and anything else I need to to get my parameters in sync with my tank, so when the weekend gets there I am ready to do my water change. The question I have is, can the water absorb any soap or perfumes that might be in the air when the laundry is being done? When the laundry is going you can smell the smell of the detergent in the air, so could it be getting in my water? I have the lid covering the can but it isn't down all of the way due to the bracket that supports my shut off float.

i would avoid a direct contact or contamination with chemicals in laundry room but wouldnt worry about smell in air. keep a lid on for accidental falling in.

I think a loose-fitting lid would be fine. A tight-fitting lid might create an anoxic zone, which could cause problems.
