Ok I changed my mind. Here is a pic from this morning. It was balled up at night before the lights came on, which seems like a normal behavior for Heteractis anemones.
I recently ordered this anemone from liveaquaria, and I did not see it until Fed Ex delivered it. I drip acclimated it for 2 hours. The mag is about 8-10 inches. So far, I have only fed it a very small krill to test its feeding response, and it pulled the food into its mouth within seconds. If all is well, I will try feeding another food item sometime next week. Thank you for wishing me luck with this anemone!
The mag has been in my care about 2 weeks now. Not much to brag about. lol..... but I am trying my best ! Observations: random flow seems very important for this species. He seems to like strong current for about 6 hours....then moderate/strong flow from the other direction. If he does not get that, he shrinks for about an hour like this.
Here is what his mouth usually looks like most of the time.
I have also seen this for up to an hour per day.
Almost balled up at night.... sometimes.
Right now here is Patrick!
I wonder if maybe they are more likely to stay open at night instead of balling up ....if they are hungry. I am taking the recent advice to wait about a month before feeding again....and the mag has not balled up since then. Sigh.... There seems to be an hour period per day where there is a deflation of tentacles. Should I be worried about an hour per day deflation for a new mag? I have been seeing less deflation with a 6 hour switch in current. Any help or comments are welcome.
Beautiful Mag. I've given alot of thought to buying one off live aquaria but I can't bring myself to do it yet. For one I've only got a 45 gallon atm and it already has a healthy crispa in it. For 2, I just don't think I'm ready yet.
I love the color on that one. Is the base more of a blue than purple? I can't quite tell.
Since I have had the anemone , it is still deflating completey once per day for about an hour at the same time every day. I noticed a recent line near an area of shorter tentacles that indicate a recent split. Hmmmm.
It usually deflates after the halide has been on for about 5 hours. An hour later, I would have never known it happened. It seems that on about every third day that it is is fed it does not deflate at all. I am not sure why.
