I have to laugh at some of the LFS around here

i also am guilty of this but we all do it to a certain extent . we are in a hobbie where every body can be right or wrong at almost any time deoending on your point of view . so please be sure to consider someones input and all the contributing factors before answering questions . i think LFS owners are sometimes a bit egotistical ,arrogent and down right mean when trying to "help" people in this hobby . we sometime accept this rudeness because we really do require help or asssistance so we are stuck with thease fools at times . we are all human ,can't we all just get along ?.........................just my 2 cents !

you know I never have problem with LFS owners. i go into a store well educated and I look around. I don't offer any advice and I rarely ask for any. I say I want that coral, they bag it, I pay for it, and I leave.
If they say something in regards to the care of a coral or fish... I usually already know from my research whether it is correct or not and nod my head with what they say. If they say something unexpected I still buy the specimen, bring it home and research it. Not always the most responsible thing but very rarely do I make a purchase with absolutely no knowledge of what I am buying (and even in the case of super rare corals etc... I can usually tell enough by their structure etc about their care).

To defend the shop you speak of... very rarely do I find deals like they offer. They also run a pretty healthy store. The 8-10 times I have been there I have never felt pressured to buy anything. I think I have been there twice during dinner when whoever was working told me to just let them know if I needed anything... which I won't ever complain about (and I wont feel bad if I interrupt dinner either).

Hope your next trip there or somewhere else is better for you! Look at it from their point of view... they are just trying to get you on board their boat so they can make a living.

I think i was in the store when that was going on.... Was it yesterday afternoon ???

Lol - yep.

I have been on both sides of the customer/vendor situations for some time (not with fish - but the concepts are still the same)

Not really a "big" deal at all, just struck me as odd that the employee was being so negative in the way he was analyzing the different components of my tank. Now - I have had some similar discussions with the Sho tank staff about the salt. They confirmed that my ALK was a little low (if I see anything that is borderline on my kit - I take a sample in). I did some research - the salt that I use is a little low out of the bucket.

Now- we talked about various fixes - and changing salt was of course one of them. But since I had not started my kalk topoff just yet (running now)- and the fact that I have ~ 2 buckets remaining of salt, I was going to take it slow and not swap out something as major as a salt mix too soon. I would rather buffer the alk if needed short term (though I did not have to).

Several posts on this-- I did not mention the store name for a reason. Sure, most here will probably be able to figure out exactly what store this is - but I did not want to turn this into a bashing session. They definitely had healthy looking livestock and good prices. I will be back, but probably more of the "i want this, bag it up" type of trip.

I am also not against constructive criticism of my setup. Livingcorals picked up the mantis I trapped - and I was plugging him for information (thx BTW). There is a huge difference between reading about this subject and the real thing. He was very patient and gave me good advice.

Sullyman - oops, Matt, Mark, 223-224, whatever it takes. I did not notice this.

FYI - you can call me Dave or W if you like - the 'w16227' tag is just the common ID that I use for message boards. It is one of my old work IDs - and is always available.

I only read the 1st post so my bad if this is said in here.
The shop you mention shound like you spoke with the owner, and I could point you to a dozen people, myself included that felt the same way after 1st 2nd and 3rd conversations. BUT those same dozen go there when ever they can. After a while you see the owner is not trying to come across this way, that is just how he is. He really is (IMO) a great guy who is very knowledge able. He is very much a "my way best way" guy, but then again to some extent we all are. Now you may be thinking why if after 3 times was tehre a 4th. I was working down the street from the store and would go in on my lunch. If I wasn't so close I may have written him off and never gotten to knwo what a great and knowledgeable guy he really is. Sounds like you are close to his store. Might consider giving it a go a handful of times and seeing if he grows on you. Like I said I know at least a dozen who he has grown on. And he is a LONG standing store, been in the biz a long time. Must be doing something right. And teh other store that has been around a long time in Park Ridge I dont think this applies too. that store charges an arm and a leg for anything and has a huge maintance customer base who hasn't a clue just a pocket book.
And yes this is my view and there for the correct view :)

i can understand the personality kind of thing , some time you do need to give them a chance i have had a similar experience and the guy turned out to be awesome in the end . so you may want to open your mind and see if he really is a jerk or just doesnt posess a personality .
