I jinxed myself!! Bta split!

Everything was looking pretty normal yesterday morning.
I did my weekly water change and carried on the day.

My bta got a bunch of bubble tips! I attributed it to the water change, but very unusual.

The rest of the day it acted weird, it was withdrawing its disk into the rock and looked sunken.
It ate some flakes the fish gave it tho.

Well.. its 7:30 am, and theres a TINY piece of skin left holding them together. Looks like a VERY even split. Ones crunched between rocks and the other went to the back

Any special care needed besides no feeding for 2 weeks or so?

I should just leave em rest and hide and whatnot right?

Im pretty glad it happened. My tank was barely able to support the monster I had. Ill have some pics after I get home. Not many.. I took one late lastnight because I was worried. Then caught the very end of it this morning :)

I can see clearly now its a 3 way split.

So I have a question.

Does the new mouth form in the middle of the new bta... or does it form from part of the old mouth?

My maroons are all freaked out. wouldent eat this morning... and I saw my female bite a big chunk of curlie q's off one of the nems 1/3 mouths and split it out.

looks so weird having such huge tenicles but theyre so much smaller lol

Well congrats, mine just split also. I think mine split because I kept tinkering with the rocks around it and some got pinched in between. Who knows. Now, my tomato doesnt know which bubble to pick, she goes from one to the other.

Here's a couple of pics..

see, yours look all perfectly split n stuff. mine looks messy.
the one in the back you cant even tell, but the two up front look so weird. one has its foot wrapped around a rock, so you can see the bottom of the foot and the disk, and the other has all its guts open, and has already floated and then stuck.

my female is totally weirded out. lol she swims from one to another to another over and over agian lol the juvi is just hanging with the one in the back. (whitch I REALLY hope moves eventually.....) Thats the one Im going to keep.....

Yeah, I definately cant complain about an even split. I hate I wasn't even in town to watch it. My mom was taking care of the aquarium for the summer while I was away doing an internship. She called me one day and told me and I couldn't believe it. Either way man, we just made some money!! Maybe soon, they'll split again. Give yours time, they'll grow back out and look good I'm sure.

did yours split today or did they have time to recover?
I really loved that mine was a good 12 inches. looked spectacular, my show piece :D but i was afraid of it getting ANY bigger. its killed off alot of stuff that i couldent move.

front left one ( note foot wrapped around lil rock)

one on right when it was about to move. (it only moved 5 inches at most)

No, I think they have been split for about 2-3 weeks now. Like I said, I was away so not sure of the actual date. I think you should give it 3-4 days until you see some improvement.

Wow! I'm so jealous! A 3-way split! Whereas, I can't even get my rose to split at all. Mine's about 7 inches across in a 25 gallon and I'm just dying for it to split cuz it's sooo huge. I feed it silversides almost everyday, but no go so far :( I've had her for about over 3 months now. Hopefully ....?

Wow, very cool. There must be something in the air. My BTA just split today, and a couple guys from my reef club had theirs split recently. I didn't even realize a three way split was possible, so that's just a bonus. I was wondering what my clown would do about the situation, but she already seems to have committed herself to just one. Anyway, thanks for sharing.

I was talking to nemo about it. Because I can see alot of curly q's (guts) on the 2 small ones. Like they RIPPED in half instead of splitting. the large one in the back looks like it never split! guess a 3 way split is unusual.

I dident do anything to induce the split. dident move any rocks, only feed it every third day, tiny bit of silverslide. guess it was just time :)

my clowns cant decide. when i went to bed the juvi was on the back on and the female on the front right. this morning the juvis on the right and female on the left lol

good luck maggie. When my big BTA split 3 ways I too had one clone that looked really healthy and 2 that were a bit more "runt-ish." One of the 2 runts ended up walking into the powerhead twice. Everyone is looking great now.

dann.. I was hoping you'd chime in since you to had a 3 way split :) Did yours have all the insides showing on the runts?

I did a water change lastnight, and they seem good today. healing a lil bit. Havent seen any movement. The lefty had its foot swelled up big this morning. I was HOPING it would untangle itself. but it dident lol

They cant shrink or swell because theres no mouth Im assuming... right?
Where does the new mouth form?? where the piece of old mouth is, or the center of the disk?

*want mine to walk a bit, bad location on the best one* Im very impatient :D

I never saw any of the stringy insides on mine. But they went into hiding right away so I may not have noticed. I also didn't see exactly where the mouth grew. I didn't chime in earlier because I had so little info. lol

I will say that one of my clones also has his foot wrapped a long way around a rock. It's actually inserted through the back of a hole in a big rock and toward the front. The anemone iswrapped all the way around the side of the rock and "mostly" facing forward too. looks sort of funny.

Alright. Ive asked a couple people. no one knows where the mouth forms. Ill keep an eye out :D

Looks like 2 of em are walking (just got back) the one in the back is coming out of hiding and towards the light.

The one thats all wrapped around a rock seems to be going INTO hiding. and the third isent doing anything.

I sure do see alot of stringys. cant get a picture to focus on em though. the two that have all the strings have 1/4 mouths each, and below where the mouth was is where the strings are. the big one has 1/2 its mouth.

No one can conclusively answer the "mouth forming" question in a case of asymmetrical splits; but, (you knew that was coming didn't you?) the mouth will form at the area with the most significant portion of oral cavity. The column will form around this location leaving mouth in the top.

There have been cases where clones have not formed mouths for many months, assumption being no oral cavity was present. Such would be more common with a manual division Ala powerhead, overflow strainer, etc.

Bottom line, the largest clone will like be ready to eat properly within 7 days, the smaller specimens possibly a few weeks.

Keep the tank stable and the water in good shape.

Hu. this is gonna be somthing else to see. They all have some part of an oral cavity... So I guess if thats the way it go's 2 of them will have a non centered mouth lol They are acting all weird now. One seems to be deflating whitch I dident think was possible.... Other two are moving... Gotta wonder how it'll re inflate.....

Since they typically divide at the oral cavity, even triples get a piece of the oral cavity and it is always off center until the column closes and the oral disk expands :)

fwiw: the anemones pictured with the 'gasters in the gallery split into 3 more frequently then my other colony. Not sure why.

heres a fresh picture. finally was able to get a picture of the guts. and heres the deflated one as well. :(

water quality is stable as ever.

They look normal to me at that stage :)

fwiw: I always worried about my maroons beating up the clones at this stage, but the clones seemed to move into the rocks deeper if necessary.
