I just picked up 2 Picasso/snowflake fish for $9.99

between ORA and wild caught? I don't think you really can. You can look for large stocks of clowns, if there are a large group of smaller guys, best bet is they came from a breeder (like ORA).....and some of the mis-striped guys will get into those batches...as I am sure is what happened in this case.

Actually most of the times you can tell by just the bodyshape/structure. ORA gets the picasso markings by inbreeding and a lot of clowns will get deformities(even if minimal) like crooked jaws, flared gills, and ive noticed that the head structures are not at pointy as the wild caught counter parts which will 99% of the time have perfect bodies.

You can tell Percs and Occ by their dorsal fin count. Percs have 10. Occ have 11

They are fish coming out of ORA with slight Picasso markings. They have a surplus of them so they are flooding the market with them as regular percs.

good save from petco...i bought my clowns from them and the dude ended up crushing another clown cause he was too lazy to remove the rock....not a fan of petco.

picked up a pair of Firefins and these clowns. No problems. I think it depends on the staff that is working them too.

Crack kills. Anyway, good for you. Perhaps this will further push the idea that the people at Petco couldn't tell a clownfish from a crab in most places. They just shouldn't be selling specialty animals with out the proper staff. Nice grab dude, we are all very jealous ; )..Heck they were probably marked down due to looking 'defective' : )

I was just there the other day picking up some tanks, didnt see any in my area. But i will scoop some up if i do!

And it depends on the petco for how bad the fish are. I have two clowns from petco and I've had them for just over a year now.

Pix...sorry...these guys won't stay still
