I need help...having diffeculties with my zoa's!

Anytime m8, believe me I know how frustrating this hobby can be....I don't dose Lugol's solution that is a little to concentrated for me to be honest. I have never tested my iodine in all these years of dosing. Many people will tell you that is nuts and it probably is, but I have never dosed so much that I have seen a reaction negatively with any corals. I like Kent's Tech-I or they have one out now that is in 5 plastic measured ampules that you add once a week. Iodine is tricky because you can add to much and it is very poisonous at high levels. The Tech-I and the ampules you should be safe. I always add a little less then recommended and add a little more a day later as not to add to much all at once the good thing with Tech-I is that is is actually 3 kinds of Iodine. I hardly ever test my water either unless I notice something is a miss. I'm one of those people that no matter what is going on I'm at least in front of my tank 2 hrs a day everyday. You get to notice things when you learn to look for the details. That's one thing my Pop's always stressed" The story is in the details". I'm sure you will come out ahead, and this will be one you learn from, and you will have gained some good experience.

I'm sure i will, thanks azurel!

I'll look into the kent Tech-I! Although it's nice to know when someone is using the product and giving there genuine feelings behind the product...rather then possibly going to the lfs and being told that stuff is great and purchasing something that is crap!

Thanks!

azurel...so my zoa's have been in my buddies tank for over a week now and he tell's me that he thinks there fully open and i was right, they dont have any skirts...

...i was wondering can and will the skirts grow back?

Thanks!

Yea skirts will grow back...It will take awhile for them too though, that's kinda what leads me to think you Lemon peel was eating them. I know pods have done this to zoanthids before I have personally seen it. I think the skirts tend to be the most easy toget and the lest likely to have toxins in them. There is nothing as far as water quality that I have ever heard of, that would cause the skirts to fall off.

Well it depends on what you want more, you might not ever be able to put a softy in your tank again. If you did put it back in the tank wither it be this colony or another colony it most likely will happen again. I had a Coral Beauty that did the same thing to Xenia and a few other soft polyps. Me, personally I would trade the fish off because who knows if it will move on to another coral type next. That is, not to say it will, but once they get a taste for coral they usually don't quit the taste for it. In my tank my corals are more important to me then the fish, usually the corals cost more and live much longer then fish. Plus the corals I keep can be fragged and traded for stuff I don't have. It really is a personal choice for you to make, if you like the fish more then trade off the coral. See if your buddy wants to trade you for something the Lemon Peel won't possibly eat. I do know that the pygmy angels can have a taste for LPS also....they are usually real safe with SPS.

well we'll see...that is a big decision, i love that fish, and i love my corals too...i have never seen him pick at any of my corals...and i already have other softies in my tank...i will try to keep a careful eye on him as well as my corals! wow...and im looking into getting my first LPS in the very near future!

Thanks for all of the help and i'll continue to let you guys know what happens!

well i saw my zoa's and they are fully open, but there color is gone...i have read that zoa's can loose there color...im wondering how...can this just be an agustment to a different set of lights or have they lost there color for good?

there present color is a dull brown redisd color...

They lost there color because they had not been open enough to get light to the zooanthellae(sp?). I had a frag do the samething once they open back up they will regain their color, and might even morph now do to the lose of the algea and regain algea that is not of that color....Hard to explain here....They will be ok though in the long run....

ok cool! thanks! my plan for them right now it to just let them grow in an environment that allows them to...that means there staying in my friends prop tank until i either give them another try or trade them off for something else...i'll keep you guys updated!

hey reefjunkie and azurel how are you guys? reefjunkie how is your tank doing? I hope well!

i just wanted to give you guys another update on my zoa's...they are still in my buddies tank but they are fully open and have been for a few days now, i believe that there color is still a brownish orange...nothing like what they use to look like but we will see!

...i just wanted to say thanks to the both of you for all of the help in which you've both given me!

...i would still like to take a trip up to LI reef junkie and see your system!

...well time to go and do some more drinking...22nd birthday is today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Belated birthday!
My tank is doing well and is already growing coral.
It's stabilized and healthy.
I have to go to my buddies reef store and see how the survivors are doing. I may take them home this week.
Thanks for asking and anytime.;)

Really? I knew people were talking about me!

I've been so busy that I haven't had time to really do serious work on the tank. And now I'm obsessing over buying a BMW...

Decisions decisions...

haha why get a BMW just drive down to jersey and i'll get you into a NEW LEXUS haha...thats were i work!

i was wondering if zoa's and ricordia are closely related...the LFS has florida ricodia that showed up today and i really like the way they look but im hesitant b/c i dont want the same problems i did with the zoa's?

Also, do you feed ricordia? if yes, what?

Thanks!

Lexus? I never thought of that, I've always been a BMW person myself.
I'm looking at an 02' 325xi. It's milage is on par and it only had one owner, carfax came back clean. $18,200. which is low for that car. KBB has it at $21k.

I have never fed ricordia. I don't think closely, but closer then they are to you or I. I think...

hey guys!

well i visited my eagle eyes today and there skirts are back and there color is also coming back...i think sometime this week i will be bringing them back home!

also, i am talking to a guy about purchasing a frag of fire and ice zoa's...i saw there pic on zoaid.com...i was wondering how you guys feel about these zoa's and are they a rarer type?

Hey road....I see your getting rid of your lemon peel. Sorry to hear that but you think or said in your post in the trading forum that it's nipping? So was he the culprit to your zoanthids you think now?

Later bud,
James
