I need opinions on when they feed there zoos, why and what.

I have a 28 nano that I've had for 5 yrs with various zoa paly polyp colonies and frags. I am using the factory pcs for lighting, with sponge, media and carbon and water parameters are good little dirty but I like it that way and so do my corals. I dose aquavitro ions, calcification and fuel once a week. I also dose phycopure twice a week. My lighting cycle is as follows leds 4 pm-1 am act 5pm-12am and daylights 6pm-11pm I feed my tank @ 12am when just the leds are on and I watch them take in the food and close again this is not moonlights its a diy led strip. I also have some xenia and others but zoas are the dominating. Just 2wanted to hear other peoples methods thanks and look forward to others methods.

In my experience, and from what I hear from others, target feeding zoos is difficult because most zoos generally don't seem to respond to it, unlike many palys, which will capture and close up on solid foods. As such, I think many people just let their fish "feed" their zoanthids (nutrients from poo).

In my opinion, zoos have food gathering tentacles and a central mouth, so I do think they will "filter feed". In my case, I bet they are grabbing larger particles that I feed my sps.

Zoanthids will receive their primary source of nutrient uptake via photosynthesis. However daily to periodic external secondary feeding is highly recommended. Our filteration systems will often remove plankton ( zooplankton) which zoanthid feed upon. For this cause, I always use/recommend Coral Frenzy or the food source of your choice.

Care must be taken when feeding. You really should turn off all return pumps and allow internal circulatory pumps/powerheads/wavemakers etc to run. After at least 10 to 20 minutes, then you can turn all return pumps back on.

Zoanthids will feed during the day and even in complete darkness. Thus, I would do 1 or 2 feedings at night time. Why? Two to three hours after your tank is completely dark, grab a red incandescent light or a dule flashlight. Shine your tank and you will still see many of your zoanthids still fully explanded, some even elongating. Zoas feed almost continually without a prey capture response as exhibited by palythoas and protopalythoas.

Hope this helps.

Jeff pretty rude, I might so myself. It was clearly a accident its my 3rd post ever. If I knew how 2 delete them I would have. If i annoyed u then why comment?! I was just wondering what other peoples methods were, By asking questions you learn new things. So if I annoyed anyone don't comment. Mucho Reef I actually have read alot of your threads and comments and I'm glad u commented. I actually turn off my powerhead and filters so what your saying is 2 leave the powerhead running but shut off the filteration? With all my lights on they rarely close unless touched by something when I feed with my leds on right after they close which I thought they were taking in and digesting then opening back up after is this true?

That's correct. You can also circulate and then turn everything off and allow the food to settle on the polyps. Just be careful not to over feed. Good luck.

The only zoanthids I feed are the ones that show a response. That are the spacemonsters and pink and golds. I feed them blackworms (oh yes they eat it) and the some formula pellets. Everything else gets the trates from the water or anything else they absorb.

Thx Mucho always love the input! I learned something new thx a bunch! Kichi I actually have brown button polyps that eat chopped shrimp weird!

Zoas really don't have to retract to feed.

CORRECTION, forgot to add that they will also feed on DOM, dissolved organic matter.

I am currently feeding my sps Reef Chili. I've also used Reef Nutrition's Oyster Feast and Roti Feast with good results.

Go Mucho!

Wait, that wasn't go as in bye-bye please leave, that was go as in continue to give your knowledgeable opinions!

Sorry for the lack of clarity. You couldn't hear the enthusiastic cheer in the way I wrote it.

LOL, man I know what you meant, I was only joking which is why I posted the wavey smile, LOL. Good to see you around again my friend.
