Sort of.

If you import RAW files, iPhoto generates a JPG of the file at import. Any change that you make is against that JPG file so they are destructive to that file but your RAW is never modified.

Gotcha.
The last time I used iPhoto, I was shooting in jpg, so I didn't pay as much attention to what happens with RAW.

I have always used photoshop - have not had the chance to play with lightroom - guess i gotta go to the store.........:-)

If you're already using PS and Adobe Camera RAW you won't gain a whole lot in actual functionality but it will make huge improvements in your work flow. Download a 30 day trial from Adobe and see if it's for you.
