I need your opinions on imported (Indonesia) ocean cultured frags

What are your opinions on these frags? My LFS got some good deals on these (especially pink mille's), but I'm afraid that they would be as finicky as wild fiji sps. So to anybody who have these, can you please share your experience (Bad and Good)with them? And to the successful ones, can you also share the species, and location in your tank in regards to flow and lighting. Thanks!!!

About 2/3 of my sps are aquacultured and all have done well. They are not as difficult to care for as wild pieces. I have pieces from Bali, Java, & Tonga and all have done well. They need them same conditions you would want to keep frags under.

acuacultured frags from Bali are getting really expensive if you ask me. A small colony will cost you well over $50.

Well for a frag, small Indo colony (about 3" high and wide), they're going for $40, which I think is decent.

k, I wasn't expecting pricing differences for a response, but I guess I feel lucky in that case. Can anybody share other experiences please, thanks.

I've had good luck with maricultured colonies/frags. All the colors either stayed the same or became brighter. I find that most are as hardy as my regular corals like ORA or what not. I think prices are going to vary. Most distributers are going to pay the same regardless so it all depends on how much they need to mark up. I have an insider on that stuff so I generally pick them up pretty cheap.

I recently picked up 3 for free that are browned out pretty bad that they gave me. They had some peeling/bleaching so hopefully I'll nurse them back to health.

70-120 bucks for aquacultured acros around here.

I paid 79 for this one. Maybe 2.5 x2.5 inches

.

Really it depends on the source. The 70-120 is local fish stores. However when I was buying online I was paying been 35-60 for them and 60 were the large ones.

Ah, thanks for the info Jay, I've been eyeing the pink mille's but they also have a browned out granulosa, which look very healthy with very good encrustation. I wonder if there is a possiblilty that this will color up. Like my lighting, the LFS also uses 20k's MH.

I think the price of Bali's have gone up also. But I still prefer Bali's to other indo aquaculture. I think the Bali's maintain their color better or even improve coloration in a reef tank better than other indo aquaculture imports. Just my experience.

Here is a tort that I got. It has 3 branches and are pretty thick. 1 branch is 2 inches and the others are about 4. The blue on this is intense and hasn't changed at all.

Another one I picked up. It's about 5 inches in diameter.

And one more for ya. This is one ball. It actually has another branch. It's kind of odd because it is like a pom pom. Long stick and then a ball.

Wow Jay, those are really nice, especially the 3rd pic! it looks like as if it is bursting, exploding. Very nice growth. what do you have for circulation in your 180?

I would agree.

I would say that they're more touchy than captive frags .... I've only lost one coral to RTN - and that was a Bali aquaculture after about a month in my tank.

Tend to like the Bali's as well for color/etc more - maybe that's just my Acropora-taste, though.

Thanks for the experiences, and advice Acroconut, and M.Mark. I have never touched maricultured acros (only aquacultured and wild, the wild died of course) and have always wondered if there is a difference from where they originated from. Wanted to do some research before purchasing any coral now (learned my lesson with the wild frag), and Im so glad RC is here for that.

aquacultured are just frags of frags of frags that have been grown out right?
yes, they are at least 2nd gen captive grown, correct me if Im wrong though.

Only running 2 power heads 1500 and 1100 seio and my return which is 800gph from my sump. I get nice growth so I'm happy. I want to up the flow but just added a calcium reactor this week and ozone next.

Man, I was expecting you to say something like 2 Tunze streams and a wavebox, a dart in a close loop, or something within those lines.

So there you go SEIO owners, and SEIO haters, here's your proof, a 1500 and a 1100 on a 180, and check out that growth!
