Once the switch is made to the 180 I'm getting one of these bad boys. After looking at some new fish possibilities in the tang isle this one is the winner! I would have loved a PBT but something about this one has me sold I find it more attractive then the Achilles tang too..maybe my taste is maturing? lol :bum:

they are a little tough to keep...its rare to find a juvenile, and the larger ones dont acclimate to captive keeping very well. They are gorgeous fish however, the acanthurus japonicus (powder brown tang) is much more hardier of a fish. the acnathurus nigricans (white cheek or gold rimmed) typically dont last in an aquarium.

I actually believe this fish should be left out of the hobbyist trade to be enjoyed in the ocean as other tangs adapt to captivity much better and can be just as enjoyable.

the achilles and chocolate tangs show just as much color and can be acquired easier as juveniles which adds to their success in captivity.

Ah, thats why you don't see too many of them.
I'm pretty good with fish (I've had quite a lot of different fish actually), so I'm up to the challenge. I do find the Achilles nice and all, I just cant justify spending +250 on one....and PBT are pretty common, as for the chocolate tang...not my cup of tea..lol

yea, they are really cool fish. I didnt mean anything regarding how you keep fish (even the best reefer loses fish), it was more a comment on the fish itself. be sure to take lots of pics when you get it, they have a great glow to them. I'll see if I can dig up photos of the one I used to have.

Please do! I'd love to see yours. What happened to it?

Yea I've lost a few fish, 8 chromis (over the pass year), 2 bangais, and 2 filefish. :l

I've been good with tangs, my other fish help teaching new comers how to eat.

he got ich during a tank crash, i'll try and find the pics today...

aww man, do you find this fish less likely to recover an ich infestation? I've left my fish to fight off the ich, its done well for me, none of them have passed because of it however if they become stressed enough they'll develop a spot or 2. They have all been clean for several months now.
