Are you guys talking about the slip on black foam cover that comes with the vortech pumps? If so, I agree that they are more trouble than benefit. they clog really easily and just one more mechanical filter to have to remember to clean.

Not to mention how much they dampen the flow. I don't use the covers on my mp60s, hope I never lose a fish to one. I have lost a fish to a tunze... Blennies are too curious for their own good and I had one swim straight up onto one and get stuck.

So sorry you lost that little guy. I still miss mine. Fun little guys with lots of personality. Mine would take freeze dried krill from my fingers.
