I just realized that my entire family is oging on a cruise in November and i dont have a freshwater tank anymore where i can just chuck a food cube in and have al ight timer....I have

Long Nose BUtterly
Scopas Tang
Sailfin Tang
Two Maroon Clownfish
Peacock Lionfish
Snowflake Eel
Bar Goby
Three Stripe Damsel

My corals are all small and easily mainatained.....

If anybody has a large (50-ish) and can maintain my fish and or corals for about two weeks, can you please let me know. It wouldnt be til november, so it will be some time, but why not look ahead... All my fish eat shrimp, my lion eats grass-shrimp.

I would pay aswell, wouldnt expect anyone to do that for me for free...:bum:

I would ask you to, but it is not at my house, that is why i said taht i need to find someone with a spare 55 or bigger around that the fish can go in. My parents dont weant anyone in our house while we are gone, that is why i have to find a place for my fish... But thanks man, i appreciate it

so you are going to catch all of your fish, take them to someone elses tank for the time, and then try to catcht hem again to move 'em back into your own tank?

you cant just expect to move your fish from here to there and back here again 2 weeks later and expect them to be happy and thriving. this is an example why you shouldn't be responsible for these animals. what is ridiculous is that you still think youre right and this is a good idea...

No, i dont wnat to do this, but since i do not live in my own house, i have to abide by my parents rules, and if they do not wnat anybody coming in to mainatain my fish for me, i dont have much of a choice. I have a very successful reef tank and am very responsible. I have three jobs and have more than enough money to hire someone to come out everyday, but i dont have that option. I canot let them just sit in there, so what else can i do. Please tell me what i can do other thatn what you said (give em' all away and start over, buying over $200 in fish all over again)...please come on, i am just tryign to see what my options are. Fish are transported all over the country everyday, form the distributors, to the store,s to the customers tanks, and as long as they are in good water, and are acclimated right, they should be fine. SO i dont know what you are talking about. If this is my only option, i will take it and do it right. I am not goign to do something that i know will kill my fish, all of my fish are hardy and seem to be immortal, so if i do have to do this, then i am almost sure i will ahve no problem. This forum is for people to look for answers, and well, i am at a loss here as to what to do about this, and i am trying to see how i can keep my fish, and if someone knows of a better way, or some device that can feed my fish meaty food daily, then i will take that route, but as of now, this is all i can think of, and even though i dont want to have to do it, i may have to . Sorry bout the rant, but i have had to deal with another person on here who ragged on me for reasons that werent legitiment, and i really dont want to have to again. I love my hobby and everyone has to start somewhere, so dont get at me for not being responsible, if you were in the same situation, you would understand.

See, you think you're right.

and...there was nothing illegitimate about my statements. I'm not accusing you of anything but being young and naive.

Atleast he isnt letting them sit in his own tank for 2 weeks to die. He doesnt have any other option, so seriously, let it go dude.

i get frustrated when i see time and time again what i think is just flat out irresponsible. too many people hide behind the justifications of "we all have to start somewhere", "you have to learn somehow" etc... but no one really gets to the reality of these situations. i made the same mistakes when i was a teen and thinking back on it, I wish someone out there told me that a reef take takes a tremendous amount of care. even if it means not vacationing this year because you cant find someone to baby sit. or if you plan on going to college in a year or two, why would you want to tear down a just budding and maturing reef tank?

people need to realize that children do not posses the means nor the stability to be responsible for such demanding animals.

remember, its not just a hobby, its almost a way of life. its not building model planes on the weekends. its caring for lives every single day.

i know this isnt only about whether he should have the right to do this or not (its too late now isn't it), its really about whats best for the animals and in my opinion it isn't with him.

ill end my rant about that here....

about the question...

like i said before, moving them about like that isn't healthy. you should come up with something else, like maybe ways to convince your mom a friend is trustworthy enough to stop by and feed the fish...

good luck

dude im like ur best friend man, i live 1 mile away from you and have maintained over 5 tanks over the 2 years. ive got a 75 reef right now. your parent can trust me, in not the kind of person to steal something. idk why they dont trust me

I didn't read through 'loosbrew's full posts, but i have to agree.

I understand that you may be responsible, and maintain a successful reef so far.
HOWEVER what makes you & the reef tank a not so fair fit is the fact that you still live at home.

You seem to have the desire to care for your fish, but at this point in your life, it may not be the wisest decision - since you are dependent on someone elses mercy. (Your parents, their house - their decision to NOT let someone else into the house)

Can i blame them for not wanting stangers in the house while they are out of town? absolutely NOT.
HOWEVER given the circumstance that you have live animals that do require care during your/your families absence .... something has to give.

You cannot expect for your reef tank to live happy when you keep disturbing it.

Yes, fish are shipped everyday throughout the world - but they do not fair well. Fish are NOT like a dog & just get up & jump in a car. Trying to catch your fish will put severe stress upon them. I'm sure you know all of this ...

... All i'd think about is if at this current point in your life, a reef is a good fit for yourself - and for the animals you'll be caring for.

Before i setup my 350g system, i sat down & thought long & hard.
I Own my house, I set funds byside for a generator large enough to run my entire tank & then some. I understand that i will NOT be able to leave for 3 weeks to go on a roadtrip like i used to do. There are lots of pieces to the equasion ....

Maybe you need to sit down with your parents after dinner one night & see if you can plead your case - ask them if you can bring in your friend whom you've known for 5 years. Even if its someone they know, and trust ... if he doesn't know much about fish, make him a list of items to do, and check for & leave emergency phone numbers for more knowledgeable people in case of anything.

I have to agree with loosbrew and the others. This is a way of life along with being a hobby. What happens the next time you take a vacation-rather it be a week or not. You have to think of the fish. Chances are at least some of those fish will get sick from all the stress of moving back and forth. If your parents are unwilling to work with you and let people in to help you etc... Then maybe you should wait to have such a big responsibility untill you are out in your own place.

I certainly hope none of you EVER need a to take a dog to a kennel! Or a horse to a boarder.
Seth came here looking for help, and you peeps wanna call him an irresponsible kid? I can undestand if if he came back from from vacation and said all his stuff died. But he is looking for help with a situation. To deem him unable to care for a reef tank because he lives with his parents is just totally lame.
Geeze people, lighten up and get a life!

I am sure if you asked that to a person who loves and owns horses or dogs, they would emphatically reply yes. And they would probabally ask whats the big deal about a lousy fish also, if they do not own some themselves.

When it comes to the care of any animal, be it fish, mammal or bird, they all need certain levels of care. The age of the person tending them does not matter if that person is capable of doing so in a resposible manner. In my opinion, he is doing just that. Being responsible for the care and well being of his animals.

The help he asking for is no differant than buying a new fish or frag, and bringing it home. Actually, probabally less stressful, as it will go through less handling and shipping.
