Hi Chicago reefers! I just won a free ticket to IMAC! Woohoo..I'm going to Chicago. Can you help with local advice? Is the Crowne Plaza an ok place to stay? What else would you plan to do if you were me? This is a once in a lifetime trip..so I want to be prepared and have a great time.

...I think they have a tour of the Shedd going, I would take that.
Then go take a walk from the museum campus up to Navy pier making a stop at at grant/millenium park.

Do the Field Museum as well.

Do the Field Museum as well.

See Sue, the largest most complete t-rex. So much more there. Pompeii, ancient egypt, gems, meteors....

Chicago has a thriving night life. Let me know when you will be in town and I will clue you in on whats going on.

Ron

Thanks so much for your responses so far. What else can you tell me? I will probably fly up on thurs. the 27th and leave sun the 30th. April 29th is my Bday!:D
How far is it from the OHare airport to where Imac will be held?
How far is the Crowne Plaza from there?
Is there a better deal I can get on a hotel room than the $109. special that they are giving to people who attend? Is there just a better hotel that will cost a little more? Are there buses..trains or what do you think would be the best mode of transportation while I am there?

Hello waterfaller 1 and welcome to Chicago
The IMAC hotel at $109 a night will be tough to beat, and its 10 minutes from the airport (Ohare) in Rosemont. If you heading downtown the CTA is a $2.00 train ride from the hotel.

Just keep in mind that it is probably a 35- 45 minute ride on the blue from O'Hare/your hotel to downtown. Once off the blue line you will need to grab a bus or just take a taxi over to the Shedd. The Field Museum is a two minute walk from the Shedd. The CTA website is a good one with easy to follow routes and instructions. See if you can get a five day pass or something. Also if the weather is nice we have a fantastic, free zoo, Lincoln Park Zoo, that is an easy bus ride from downtown.

But you won't find a better hotel deal, and almost everything else downtown will be a LOT more expensive.

check out one of the bargain travel (expedia, travelocity, etc) for hotel deals, I just saw the hilton ohare on there thurs - sun for $89 a night. you might be able to find a better deal on there.

If you are able to, get in on the trip to the shedd on thursday. the new (2 years) reef exibit is in full swing. The Cubs are in town and tickets are still available for friday http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=chc&m=4&y=2006
White sox are away.

http://www.citypass.com/city/chicago.html
will give you multiple chicago attractions for $49.50

http://www.theimac.org/ has different suggestions too (Oprah show, lake michigan tours, etc)

Hope that helps

The Crowne Plaza is a nice place to stay. We stayed last year for IMAC and am doing it again this year.

The hotel offers a free shuttle bus from O'Hare to the hotel. No need for a bus or taxi unless you want to.

and panmammatt stayed 1 night at my house

staying at the Crown Plaza would be very convenient

Thanks for the welcome and info everyone.:)
I have my plane ticket and room. What are some local foods or things you would consider a must have/do ? I think the Shedd's will definately be on my list. What are the greatest night spots? Is it basicly safe to walk around downtown at night..or best to travel everywhere by cab?

Hey, have fun. Chicago is a great place. I don't go downtown much, but when I do, I used the free trolley system to transport. Try going to Navy Pier. They have fireworks everyother day.
