Ian's 400 Gallon Marriage Test

Wow! This is really beautiful. That rock is amazing. I am going to check it out for my next build! Did you ever see if you did indeed get a Mantis?

Ahhhh. That freaks me out a little. This is seriously one of the most beautiful builds. I love your tank. Just amazing. I wish I would have never of went with dry rock in my 180. Of course I seeded it with live and had about 50 lbs of fiji. It doesn't even look half this good.

Also, how many mantis did you find and how many pounds did you get for your tank?
I will be setting up a smaller 150 and wanted to buy some of this rock.

I got 220 pounds and I figure I have 4 in the tank of varying sizes.
They are actually pretty cowardly as I watch the little rock blenny hitch hiker beat em up all the time.

LOL! you need to get is shape for some swimming!

...if you want to go see the real reef like we all are trying to keep in our living rooms..... this is the place.....

You can snorkel right off the beach....and pick up conchs and lobster..and swim with the reef fish.....as I did....is an amazing place and some of the last unspoiled reefs left in the Caribbean !!

Racheal was on the island yesterday.....we provide housing for Her and other scientists that study this unspoiled reef...as there is nothing within 50 miles of the island!

Crab removal:
I used rock from Corpus Christi Bay in my tank, dead rock seeded in the bay, and got a lot of small crabs in it also. What I did was not to feed the tank when I first got it in there. No fish yet. At night I put a smooth tall glass against the rock with a piece of fish on the bottom. Crabs craw in and cannot get out. I had a large tank 8X3X2.5 foot. I placed several glass every night for a few nights and caught about 50 of those crabs until they are all gone. This is a really easy way to catch these guys. Back to the bay they go and my tank is crab free.

Hope this help

From what I've read, mantis can't stand each other, and as they grow they will attempt to kill each other off until there is only one left.

An interesting suggestion I got from another reefer regarding pests on fresh rock was to add something really belligerent like a yellow margin trigger that will eat just about anything, including any crabs and worms it can find in the rock.

To battle the heat I decided (meaning my wife suggested after subliminally planting the idea) to build a fish room around my garage setup. An AC will cool the room quite nicely and I should be able to maintain a regular 79 degrees without a chiller.
