So most of you know the Allegheny river is in my front yard. I monitor the area in front of my place, but I also travel up and down. I'm by lock 3 but will go as far as 7 on the top to Pittsburgh where it merges with the Mon to form the Ohio river. We had temps that didn't get above 0 for a day or two then below freezing for a couple days. Sheets of ice form across the river 8 inches thick. It has to go somewhere. Lots of pics. No marinas were safe.

Looks similar to up here. Everything was pretty iced over but the rivers have opened back up. Would have been cool to get to Niagara Falls to see them partially frozen over.

Ugh! Im so buried in snow theres nothing going on here but more snow and more on the way. I remember when I lived in Bend Oregon, we had an irrigation canal in our back yard. It was shut down every winter, but theyd flush it a few times during that season. One winter day, I was home from work, sick. I heard this weird roar and I went out back and saw this ice flow coming. Slowly it crawled. No water, just an ice flow. The water was a few hundred yards behind pushing the ice. I grabbed the video camera and followed it for a couple hours. Really interesting to see that ice flow rise, heave and push forward.

Hearing it begin cracking was pretty intense. From our living room it sounded like gun shots. It started cracking around 11 Sunday morning and went till late in the afternoon.

The one that got me was the guy on the catwalk looking at the sailboat. Yes, it was his.

Some like to be able to go out in the winter. The guy in the sailboat, spends the weekends on the boat. There were a couple houseboats people live in still out. Manny moves the docks up river to help protect them. There's also a large pillar for the bridge right up stream. The river freezes every year, but this is the first time since he's owned the marina that he's had problems.
