Ich or fluke? pls help

Thanks Mr Tuskfish/cougaran

My SG is now 1.014...

Do you know anyone who successfully took a sensitive/finicky fish like a regal angel all the way through hypo treatment. I am thinking 8-12 wks is a long time.

I am assuming that my water quality will drop cos the protein skimmer wont work that well in basically freshwater so I cant feed the fishes as much as they may need....who knows about biological filtration... it may crash and then what!

What is your opinion about quinine or chloroquine?

The fish really has a small amount of ich and may be able to fight it off without help; just a good diet, vitamins and pristine water. The skimmer really isn't going to lower water quality that muck. Skimmers are a long term tool and help mainly with nitrate. Nitrate really doesn't bother fish at all at levels say <60ppm. (with possibly a few exceptions) A FOWLR tank can run forever without a skimmer, more WCs, though. Everything I hear about Quinine Sulfate is positive. Its now the treatment of choice of some real experts; Fenner, Goemans, et al. I'd use it without hesitation, if I hadn't been using copper for so long. Although I'm a firm believer in treating all fish for parasites; there are lots of folks on this forum who would say (I assume) to wait and give the fish a chance to fight it off. Its your call. Are these spots getting worse?

Forgot to ask; where do you have this fish? You can't hypo in your DT; it will kill all your friendly bacteria and just about all life in your LR & substrate. That, in turn, will likely send ammonia sky high. Hypo must be done in a QT.

Too late to edit, I've said this twice today. Many hobbyists think that hypo doesn't kill of a bio-filter or many inverts; and they may be right. I'm just in the group that thinks hypo will destroy most of a a bio-filter; based on a paper by a University marine aqua-culture researcher. I admit, there is a lot of good opinion that says otherwise.

Thanks for the heads up.

The spots are about the same. Regal is eating well.

I thought that it was ok to hypo in a reef somewhere... My fish is in DT but I took out all corals and inverts. I do have liverock and sand. Let me reverse my hypo.

After all the research and experience, I think that regal will not do well in a hospital or qt tank....

This all so confusing!!

I'm afraid I may have added to the confusion; I mis-spoke, then corrected myself in post# 23. Hypo may be OK in your tank, there are just some differences of opinion on the topic.

The spots have multiplied. Regal is still eating well. 3 days ago I initiated quinine therapy! At this point I am thinking crypto.

The tank has yellowish tint...The spots seem to be improving. Surprisingly the paremeters(ph ammonia nitrite ) have held up well.

I will keep you all posted...
