Ich Outbreak Update

thanks! 1 last question. you guys are using this as dips right?

Yes, per instruction on the bottle as a prophylactic or therapeutic short term bath.

It can also be used as a QT long term medication, but I would do that only if I had an active velvet or uronema outbreak.
Velvet can usually better be treated with CP (NLS Ick-Shield Powder) but if you have to treat wrasses, seahorses or pipefish you can't use CP. With those fish formalin is your only alternative.

Glad to hear all worked out well for you. I didn't have that kind of luck. How do you know the ich is all gone? Did you wait 72 days?

I am getting a lot of questions that could be answered in the posts above.

You probably could have answered my question in less words than it took you to reply to my original question...thanks anyways and good luck with your fish.

Thanks. You (and another member) could have read the posts and not bothered me with the question too. I am still wondering the point of the question anyway, but oh well.

I am the other member that asked you a question. I am sorry if asking you questions about something that you posted is "bothering" you, I will just have to keep that in mind and make sure the next time you have problems and questions to not bother you again.

You obviously were not that interested if you did not read my posts, so that is ok. But thanks anyway.

I am sorry your treatment protocol for your fish didn't work.

Hopefully it's gone, but you will likely only know for sure when you add a new fish. Your current fish may just have acquired immunity to the ich that was in your system.

This!!!

Well here is another update, and not a good one. I stand corrected on my earlier thread. It looks like cypto has not been cured. Here is what happened: 2 new fish were introduced (after being put through TTM, Prazi, and observation), to the display over a month ago, and now they have the familiar white spots on their fins. The spots are on a yellow tang and a Potters angel. There are no other symptoms, so I am hoping it might by lymphocystis virus, or some other pathogen besides crypto. So far, they both eat like pigs and swim normally.

If crypto is still in my system, I completely understand why so many people get out of this hobby. If I could find a procedural error that I made, I assure you I would report it. It looks like this 100 gallon reef tank is cursed. Thank you all for your input, and I am very sorry if I came across as rude. This situation has been more than stressful. I refuse to put these fish and myself through quarantine again. :fun2:

Bummer...really sorry to hear this. It's possible there is a new (or evolved) strain of crypto that can remain encysted for more than 72 days. This is at least the second anecdotal account on these boards (that I am aware of) of a DT remaining infected after the fallow period.

How long was the total QT period for the new fish? Any flashing or twitching from the new fish? Usually they start flashing and behaving erratically before any white nodules appear. Post a pic if you can.

Did you quarantine for a few weeks after ttm? Not all cyst would fall of ttm. Reason too observe after ttm and see if any residuals ich still there.

The original fish went through TTM and were kept away from the display for 75 days. They seem to be unaffected and they have been back in the display for a couple of months now. The two new fish (yellow tang and dwarf angel) went through 12 day TTM and 2 week observation. They have developed crypto after being in the display just over a month. I have a couple of wrasses and an angel in quarantine now, and I have been using display tank water for their water changes. I expect them to come down with it any minute now.

I give up! :crazy1:

I was under the impression that the parasite is only on the fish about a week. That is why TTM works.

Unfortunately Cryptocaryon is capable to encyst on the fish itself.
It is normally very rare, but if there is no other suitable substrate available, like usually in TTM tanks, some protomonts may encyst on the fish.
Cryptocaryon does not like to encyst on glass or plastic, so my recommendation would be to add a layer of coral sand to the tanks for ich to have a preferred substrate to encyst on. The sand can then be sterilized by boiling it.

sorry for your issues.....ich can be maddening!!!!

however, i'm looking at your time line and it is not adding up...your yt and angel have been in your DT for over a month? imo, you rushed this; observation time should have been 4-6 weeks after TTM.
