Ich Outbreak Update

sorry for your issues.....ich can be maddening!!!!

however, i'm looking at your time line and it is not adding up...your yt and angel have been in your DT for over a month? imo, you rushed this; observation time should have been 4-6 weeks after TTM.

I guess so. Too late now! :eek1: They came from the Diver's Den so I was hoping for the best. So you think the tang and angel brought ich into the display again? Even after TTM? I must have read the procedure wrong because I thought that TTM virtually eliminated ich.

imo, yes...from the Thrower " Unfortunately Cryptocaryon is capable to encyst on the fish itself."

University of Florida, in a paper, says this is possible, and why a long observation time is recommended. TTM is nearly foolproof, however nearly is not 100%. You could try "managing" ich in your DT?

Well, I am definitely not going through pulling everyone out again:thumbdown so I guess management is my best option. Any suggestions? The tang and angel are still eating very well, and are very active. I feed lots of Nori soaked in Selcon, and (as much as I hate to admit it), I have been soaking the mysis in garlic. They love it.

This is really not the route I would have chosen, but it really is my best option for now.

It actually can work as long as you keep the stress level low and be careful what fish you add.
Quarantine is still required.

Unfortunately Cryptocaryon is capable to encyst on the fish itself.
It is normally very rare, but if there is no other suitable substrate available, like usually in TTM tanks, some protomonts may encyst on the fish.
Cryptocaryon does not like to encyst on glass or plastic, so my recommendation would be to add a layer of coral sand to the tanks for ich to have a preferred substrate to encyst on. The sand can then be sterilized by boiling it.

If Cryptocaryon is capable of encysting on the fish the TTM wouldn't guarantee an ich free fish is that correct? If so, how do you know when a fish is ich free?

With most fish it is rather unlikely that ich encysts on the fish. Ich doesn't adhere well to mucus, so it would need to be a fish with exposed scales or other bony structures not covered with slime. I would consider tangs as some of the more likely candidates due to their scalpels.

Can you post pictures of the affected fish?

The two new fish (yellow tang and dwarf angel) went through 12 day TTM and 2 week observation.

I give up! :crazy1:

4-6 week observation period is what is preached here usually, perhaps this is where your process broke down. Sorry to hear about the troubles, I am fully aware of your frustrations and this is why I have abandoned fallow periods.

Thanks for the support. This really sucks. I wish I knew if the fallow period failed, or if the tang or Potters brought crypto back in. I am still not totally convinced it is marine ich. The yellow tang is small and very fast. The Potters is fast too. I really see no way in adequately photographing them. So far, the yellow tang appeared to have some salt-like grains on his pectoral fins yesterday. I couldn't tell this morning with just the actinics on. I really did not see anything on the angel. They are both eating and swimming fine. My original five fish are unaffected as far as I can tell. I will keep you posted!

Tassod, was it marine ich you were battling too? Or something else? Did your fallow period fail or did you add new fish?

Apologies for the long post now but Im going through this right now as well. Sometime in Oct last year, i mistakenly added fish without QT from a local reefer. Big mistake. Fish had Ich. I took everyone out and went through TTM. Fish that were displaying symptoms actually went through both TTM and copper.

Since i was upgrading anyway but was using same live rock and including the same corals, i left the old tank and new tank fallow for about 65 days. This was likely the reason for my issues now. No idea why i didnt go the full 72 days. I only had a week left!

Anyway, added my fish back and 2-3 weeks later, saw symptoms for ich (flashing and spots). There was a moment that i wanted to give up. Im new to the hobby but i felt like ive been QT'ing instead of enjoying my DT. Anyway.

Since its a 225 and had about 15 fish, I decided to see if i can manage it. Only fed with soaked food in either selcon, vitachem, and zoecon or fed live black worms. In another forum, I read about diatom filters so I even bought that. Unfortunately 2 fish died and another wasnt looking good so decided to take them out again.

This time, I will go through the full 72 days or even longer and trust that my procedure works.

The only difference that Ill do this time around is Im going acclimate black mollies to saltwater and QT them as well. Then add to my sump after 72 days. If theyre fine after 6+ weeks, then the rest will go in.

I hope that this fallow period works this time around. Im not sure what ill do if I mess it up again. As you said, its disheartening.

I remember Steve said ich can be masked if the fishes come from a system with low copper (DD uses low copper). The 2 weeks TTM will not be able to clear the ich since they are masked. (I read this info from a post here) Then, 2 weeks of QT is not enough. If the QT is 4 weeks, you may see the ich on the fishes since they are masked.

TTM, if executed correctly, will eliminate crypto completely since it exploits the parasite's ability to form cysts. It doesn't matter if the parasite is masked (i.e. subclinical infection). I agree that 2 weeks of QT is insufficient. 30 days should be the absolute minimum to ensure other parasites (Amyloodinium, Brooklynella) are not present.

If you are not observing flashing, twitching or rapid breathing, it may be something else. I've seen fish get a brief lympho infection when introduced to a new tank, for example (most likely from a fin nip from a carrier fish).

The small yellow tang is flashing and breathing rapidly. Nice. There goes the ticking time bomb. I swear I will never own a freaking tang again. As awful as it may sound to many of you, I am letting this one run its course. There is no way I am going through another fallow period with quarantine tanks all over the house. I don't have the time or resources for that. If only a few survive, I will move them to a smaller setup and change the 100 gallon over to freshwater. You guys can have it. This is too stressful, time consuming, and expensive for my health. I thought aquariums were supposed lower blood pressure? Lol:spin1:

My fallow period failed twice and the second time i waited 4 months. To be honest, i don't know what the parasite was but it killed quick so i doubt it was ich. Like you, i don't have time for this nonsense so I broke down the tank and bleached it and started over as a FOWLR. Initially when i started adding fish, I had problems again and lost more fish. I now run copper in it so in essence it is a full time QT if you will but the fish are fine now and doing great. The copper seems to keep things under control. I use coppersafe and none of the fish have any problem with it.

My wife has convinced me to set up a tank as a way to reduce stress. lol

I hope things work out well for you and your fish.

How long have you been running copper in your tank? I thought copper was poisonous to fish.
