My new tiny naso tang got ick, I was able to get him out, but my hippo has a couple of spots. Trying to catch him everyday. ( I do like the idea someone had of using a clear plexiglass box)Can he maybe fight it off, and not need to do the copper thing??He still has a great appetite.

yes providing he eats well it should stay at bay. some cases worse than others. alot depends on what you will introduce in the future. by that i mean are you just starting to stock your tank or are you done? if you are done and you have a mild case then i would just feed variety and monitor its condition.

i should mention if you are starting to stock it and are going to treat your naso i would catch him and treat him as well. hth

Once you have a fish in your tank with ich, the tank has ich. Only a small portion of what you see on the fish is what you really have, some of it is under the skin, in the gills etc. What's more, the ich parasite has different stages; one stage is a cyst that falls into the sand, where it can later hatch and re-infest the original fish, or any new fish you introduce to the tank. All fish should be treated outside of the display tank, even those not showing symptoms. The display tank should be left fishless for 6-8 weeks so that the ich will die off (having no host). Here is a link to information from the "New to..." thread at the top of this forum. It will seem like a lot of trouble to set up a quarantine tank and catch and treat your fish--but if you do not do it, any fish that you put in the display runs the risk of getting ich.

I am pretty stocked. I really don't want any more fish. I have 1 vlamgii, 2 oscallaris, 2 damsels, my hippo, a sailfin, 2 emerald crabs, 30 hermit crabs,4 chromis,2 red banded cleaner shrimp,1 copperband.2 bar gobies. My lfs is treating my naso tang, they have a tank set up already.I was told that the rest of the fish have prbably built up an immunity to it. I had just gotton the naso tang, it was being bullied for a day ( its tiny-the damsels were messing with it one day, but seemed to be ok after that.

Like otrlynn said, the other fish in the tank are carrying the parasite whether they're infected badly enough to show signs or not. It's pointless to treat the Naso and then add it back to a tank that has the parasite in it.
