This SPS came on some rock from a purchase a year ago as a little piece of nearly nothing. Now, I have two good size pieces of this thing. Any idea what it is?

A Hard coral?

Looks like it could be pipe organ coral?? Not sure of the true name of it though. Or it could be some form of Acropora, many abnomal and deleterious conditions can result in polyp extenions, and beings you said it came in on LR it might be suffering or just having a hard time adjusting to your set up?? I'm just shooting in the dark here. It apears to be a hard coral but from a pic thats just a guess.

Yeah, sorry it is a hard coral with polyp extensions. Its in an odd place in the tank so getting a decent picture is tough. I saw something at Clayton that looked similar, Jan said it was an Acropora.

Well if it is an Acropora and it's polyps are out like that it is not happy. I don't know what kind of lighting your running but I'd try to place it directly under them where it can receive lots of light. And maybe in an area with good water movement too. Very cool that ya got him FREE

isnt calling it acropora about as specific as calling an animal "dog"

Danfrith, thanks for the ideas. After doing a google search, I think that you are on the money with acropora aculeus.

Its nice to know what you have in your tank some times.
