Hiya all,

I recently obtained two un-identified Stichodactyla anemones from De Jong Marinelife. At first I thought they were Haddonis, but now I have a suspicion they aren't. One is currently hidden in the rockwork, the other has climbed up from the sand onto a column, and I have two pictures of it. Any ideas what it is?

Better photos of the column, but to me it looks like S. helianthus

I'll make another effort on pictures tomorrow, it was getting dark in the tank and it is sort of hidden. Thanks for the suggestions, though, that's the species I think it might be, too.

I will also try to get some more pictures of the second anemone when it come out again.

The new anemones have not hosted any clowns yet - my saddleback stays with his four Haddonis and the ocellaris' remain close to a rock. usually with new Haddonis added to my tank, my saddleback will move into it pretty quick. Since it hasn't this time around, I suppose they are not Haddonis. One of the new anemones settled next to one of my Haddonis for a few days, with tentacles touching, and I could see no discomfort for either of them, although the Haddoni has now retracted under a rock as if it didn't enjoy the contact on second thoughts.

Clowns will likely not accept S. helianthus.

BTW did you get it from their retail store or from their wholesale facility?

I am a retailer and my last shipment of livestock came from them. I love anemones and these two ended up in the display tank in my store.

Did you go yourself or had it shipped? Their wholesale facility was always awesome when I went there in the 90s. You could often find rare or obscure fish and inverts that hardly ever make it into normal stores.

It was shipped to me.

I have never visited De Jong, only seen pictures, and they seem to have a great facility. They also have an amazing range of livestock, as you say. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the largest in Europe. At any given time you can find all kinds of rare and exotic animals.

How far are you away from them?
If it's within a days drive I would highly recommend to visit them at least once. For me it was a 3-4h drive each way and it was always worth it. I usually started very early so that I would be there when they opened.

About two hours flight :). I do plan to visit them the next time I am nearby, considering I am a registered customer of theirs.

That is the S. helianthus, the Atlantic carpet anemone. Low number of folds, short pointed tentacles and the yellow brown verrucae is characteristic of this anemone

Ok, thanks for the helpful answers, guys.

I am a little bit concerned about it's bad reputation as a fish killer, but on the other hand, my Haddonis are quite sticky, too. I can't really imagine a fish escaping their deadly embrace, either. And the S. helianthus is beautiful. I like the patterned colors (not really visible in the pictured).
