I know it's a trigger fish, but can't figure out which kind. If you would please ID. And also he's been very standoffish. Like this just hanging out under rocks or very close like this. We did just introduce him today and he was a rescue from my LFS. Any info on him would be great. Thanks a bunch!

The behavior concerns me a bit if it persists longer than 4-5 days. LFS that have a non-therpeutic level of copper in their systems can often mask velvet. One of the behavioral symptoms is reclusive behavior and sensitivity to light.

That behavior doesnt overly concern me yet, as that can be pretty normal for a triggerfish that was just introduced.
Triggerfish hanging by rocks is pretty normal when they are scared as their go to defense is to lock themselves into crevices so predators cant get them.
If this guy was in a tank at the LFS where he wasnt the boss could explaine his tentative behavior.
Also if you have other aggressive fish this could keep him behaving like this.

Vut if it does persist it could be a sign of something more serious, but so far his behavior isnt out of the ordinary.

I agree which is why I qualified it with "if it persists longer than 4-5 days".

Then perhaps relating exactly how "normal" the current behavior is rather than mentioning velvet would have been the more helpful response. Instead of leaving OP to worry needlessly.

Species appears to be Rhinecanthus verrucosus, care is pretty standard with most triggers.

I was assuming basic reading skills. A new fish that is not quarantined should be carefully monitored even if it is exhibiting "normal" behavior when that behavior can also be consistent with a problem if that behavior persists. And most especially if it is a rescue from an LFS which implies it was at the LFS longer than normal.

Thanks for the advise gentlemen. I'll keep an eye out and make sure he stays healthy. He's eating good, he just likes to hide right now.

Or a rescue could imply he was being harassed, as most LFS keep aggressive fish in the same tank.

Either way you should know what they say about assuming...

I say rescue because someone had dropped him off because they didn't want it anymore, and the LFS had him in a very small tank and didn't have anything bigger for him. And he looked horrible.

def a Rhinecanthus verrucosus or Bursa Trig.
he looks fine to me...I would leave the lights off for 2-3 days after introducing any new livestock...
give him a fresh clam to pick at...
what else is in the tank?

Thanks for the info! I'll leave them out as much as possible. I have a Gold Banded Maroon Clown also in the tank, but they seem to be doing ok when they're out and about. I know they're not supposed to be compatible, so if they start messing with each other I'll give the trigger to a friend of mine.

nice fish OP, hope he does well for you!

Not sure what size your tank is but if it is possible I would recommend keeping the trigger over the clown...they are just terrific fish and are a blast to watch...
