ID Please

Dude, never seen that cocoon looking thing before , and I've been surfing RC for some time. interesting.

I have to scape the lip of my sump every day to remove em all. I get tons of them a day.

I figured it was die off from my LR, but now that I'm all cycled, I started looking closer at them and they look like a shell or larva or something.

Any idea what the other thing is? The black and white spongy thing?

Thanks
Josh

Empty brown shells. Tons on sump rim every day.

White/black jelly looking thing that is growing rapidly.

Im sorry I cant help but those are two things I have not seen before. Although if they were in my tank I would lean towards the first being small crustacean molt and the second looks to be a type of colonial tunicate maybe? Cool none the less.

Thanks for the thoughts. The more feedback the better.

The thing that baffles me is if these little brown things do belong to living creatures, where are these creatures? my sump and display have 0 visible pods in them. Even at night when I sneak up on my sump with a flashlight, there are no pods. So I figured the brown things were inanimate matter. Dead plants or something. But their shape looks of animal nature.

i dunno. But I'd like to get as much feedback as I can.

I hope the Cirolanid Hunter sees this thread and chimes in.

I think these may be the shells of some kind of pod?

Thanks
Josh

I have no idea what those are but here is a bump for ya.

BTW they tank as well as the new webpage is looking good

since you live in So Cali, do you think it could be some type of land bound bug thats laying its eggs in your tank? theres lots of insects that lay there eggs in SW, i have heard of people having it happening. just a thought. it doesnt look like any type of egg sack, or molt of any creature i have seen.

My first thought when seeing those pics was some type of fly larvae cacoon....

Just my first thought..

Certainly could be. That was one thing I thought of. But I see so many every day, and I haven't ever seen bugs around my sump.

I also see the little brown shells floating on the water line in the main display sometimes.

What could the black and white pillow be?

Thanks
Josh

This guy needs an answer, those things don't look like they belong in a reef tank.

bump for you fmellish.

you might try a different forum. just a hint. If you don't answer to you own thread the RC team will be to the rescue "in time".

I also have never seen or heard of anything in your first pic...those definately don't look like they belong in a reef tank.

The second pic, I can say with about 90% certainty, that it is a type of Colonial Tunicate...but it is too difficult to get the exact ID without proper equipment.

best bet on the other thing is a sponge of some type. thats the best ID i can come up with :D is it growing? does it move?

are they always hollow or do they ever have anything in them. If they have something in them put them in a glass jar, keep it moist, and see what you get. Also its very hard to tell the size of them.

I think i am also leaning towards flies.

The black and white spongy thing in the main tank does not move, but it does grow. It has doubled in size in last 2 weeks.

The other things may just be flies. Each one is the size of a grain of rice.

Thanks
Josh

I think they are the left over cocoons of maggots/flies. Following a certain live rock shipment at our store, we had a good deal of them as well, but only a very bad smelling one. I second the colonial tunicate.
