Gonna jump on the bandwagon with both answers (as though you needed more opinions, right? )... because we had the same problem with the LR that came into our store also, it was pretty gross (because it wasn't well-cured, it had a lot of rotting material in it, after a delayed shipment, and the flies got to it). It's got that telltale look of fly pupae that I remember from entomology... gross

Keep the tunicate though, those things are neat and harmless (and the blue lollipop ones... not this kind... are expensive!)

The brown things are fly cocoons. I had them as well when I first set up my tank for the first few days. If you have a sump or a filter bag look in the bag and a few flies might take flight. Likely they came off the LR while they were in the warehouse or when they were being transported

i need to figure out where they're coming from. I have tons every day that I have to wipe up.

And why do you have a picture of a cute dog if that is not your cute dog?

I can't believe those are fly cocoons...I wouldnt have believed it if someone told me that they had fly cocoons in their SW fish tank, but I saw the picture with my own eyes...quite strange.

i had the same thing in my sump. i ordered 2 boxes of fiji rock
(on sale) and when i opened the boxes, a bunch of little gnats flew out. the rock's been in there for a year now, and im still pulling those dried up maggots from my sump
