ID Please

I have no idea what this guy is. Just found him crawling through a hole in my LR. Had my tank for 9 months now, never seen him before. anyway, he almost looks like a mantis shrimp, but who knows. sorry that the pic isnt clear, i only had a second to snap it. Also, its about an inch long, adn so are my fish. any threat? I did loose a fish recently, and dont know why. thanks alot

yeah pretty sure its a mantis, just saw it go after a snail and hit it with its claws like mantis do....bah...help? lol My wrasse is very attracted to it, but swims away when the shrimp moves toward it. i dont want to lose fish, and i dont know how i'll get this guy out with out a trap...

It is indeed an stomatopod, probably Neogonodactylus wennerae. It will about double in size in a year, but not much threat to your fish. Small snails, hermits and crabs are its main prey.

is it a threat to corals? if not, then is it that if i leave it in there i will just have to constantly replace my hermits?

Minimal threat to corals. It may chip around the entrance to its cavity a bit, but usually the coral overgrows such damage very quickly. I would leave it where it is.

Well, altho that guy is pretty cool to watch. I think i would rather remove him and keep my fish. still deciding tho. If i decide to take him out,anyone want him?

Hey, id love to give him to someone, dont think i have the heart to kill it. But i have the feeling shiping it to another state would be more of a hassle then its worth for a LR stoe-away. sry

It is unlikely it will hurt your fish. They are quite hardy, and can be kept in a smaller tank of their own. They are pretty cool, and given that you can catch it, I'd suggest giving a try of letting it have it's own home.
