The LFS said it was imported from Hawaii. The closest common name I found is Thompsons surgeonfish. I found very little information about this tang on the web. He typically hides a lot although I have only had him for 2 days. The reason I purchased the fish is because of the eyes. For some strange reason the eyes sparkle like diamonds. Has anyone ever kept this fish before? He does not pick at the rocks at all. Thanks

I am having a hard time determining, but it looks like a Acanthurus nigrofuscus, which is known as a Black Tang here (not sure whether that is the Common Name or just what we call it here in Hawaii).

The Black Tang is a relatively common Tang that we see in small lagoons and such.

I think the black tang has the same shape as a yllow tang. This tang does not have a pointed nose. The face is shaped more like a lamarcks angel fish.

The Acanthurus nigrofuscus has a shape like the Achilles Tang, not really like the Yellow Tang.

Try search the scientific name rather than BLack Tang, because I am not sure it's common name

It could be. I have a hard time telling from the picture. When I see the Acanthurus nigrofuscus it sometimes has that little yellowish tinge on its back tail, whereas I don't think I have seen a Acanthurus thompsoni with that little yellowish tinge before.

But then again, I have not seen either in the lights of an aquarium, so I cannot be certain that the Acanthurus thompsoni doesn't have that.

Looks like a thompson's to me as well. Standard tang. I think it ends up shaped sort of like an orange shouldered. Greyish fish.

thompsons tangs are comonly called white tail tangs but can just have white tips

from w.w.m.com

Acanthurus thompsoni (Fowler 1923), the White-Tailed Surgeonfish, a good name for this species except for its populations in Hawaii which bear no white on their tail areas. Another name for this planktivore is Thompsonââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢s Surgeonfish. Though not a striking beauty, this Whitetail tang is a good feeder and stays moderate small (to ten inches). Rarely imported into the trade.

pictures show one w/ a white tail and one w/out
