ID this?

These were floating in my sump. About a mm in length. Kida dark reddish brown. I have never seen anything like this before.

Fish poop? Eggs?

You know, I've seen this come up about 5 times in the past couple of years, and so far I've never seen anyone ID it...

Dissect one and see whats going on!

Definitely not media of some type that found its way in there?

They do look like mouse turds but are smaller. Sump is open but is right under the tank, there is really no way a critter could be above the sump.

I will try for a closeup photo but they are really small. Too small to do any for of dissection unaided and I do not own a microscope.

The thing that gets me is they were floating...

Definitely not rabbit pellets. :) They are round and much larger. I used to own rabbits.

But if someone is opening a betting line I'll put money on a rabbitfish. ;)

No rabbitfish in the tank.

Livestock is typical cleanup crew and some small fish (chromis, clowns, gobies, a cardinal). I've had these fish for at least several months or years and I've seen most of them poop - it never looks like this. These are not like any fish poop I've seen before. I tried to break one up with a razor and I it was much denser/harder than I expected.

It's almost like pellet food, but after sitting in a tupperware of tank water since last night they're still hard and totally intact, they haven't broken down at all. I do feed NLS pellets but hadn't for maybe 12 hours before I found these, and at any rate the NLS pellets sink and break down fairly quickly.

Most people described them as looking like insect casings, and they really do in the close up pics I've seen. And they're always floating, too. I'm dying to find out for sure after seeing it so many times.
